Looks original but it appears to have been touched up.

I've been staring at this dial and put it into photoshop.
    here's my impressions:
Dial spent some time in a drawer(lots of small glancing scratches)
The rub marks on the Top portion of the subsecond dial but
Not on the lower half(which would be protected by the 5 and
7 dial rivets) confirms this to me.
The Roman numeral 4 markers are not flat and are throwing light
off in different directions leading me to believe they have been off
    the dial at some point.
The upper left quadrant of the subsecond dial looks as if a cleaning
attempt was started here but abandoned.
I think the dial fonts look original. I think at some point an attempt
to clear up some of the mold was done and haloed the fonts, markers
    and minute track.
Whether the ink on the minute track was splotched in the cleaning attempt
or it was touched up, I can not tell. The color of the splotch above
the 7 is not the same color as the minute track. But the lines around it
look like the original color of the rest of the black on the dial.

thanks, that confirms my daubt. i must learn the photoshop thingi.....so far the only reason to remove the markers is to refinish the dial. or a cleaning attempt, as you say, and the cloth caught the sharp edge of the marker and ripped it out. i had my reservations about most of the straight (one) roman markers; not all look straight now. but you have the better tool; my eyes are 64 years old.... thanks for that effort. kind regards. achim
