Options for trying-on older generation Seamaster Divers?

I'm interested in acquiring my first Seamaster, and I'm educating myself on the different references that interest me. I've tried on the current generation at an OB. But my preference is for the 3rd generation or older Bond models -- 2531.80, 2220.80 or 212.30.

From what I've seen, ADs located in my area (NYC) only stock the current generations and I'd like the opportunity to try on some of the older references to check how they feel on the wrist. And also it'd be nice just to have the experience of holding a genuine copy so I can learn what qualities to check for if I'm buying used.

Any tips on options for trying some of these older references on in person? Appreciate any advice.

Maybe you can join a watch club or meet-up group. Another possibility is to buy several of them and sell the ones you don't like. TBH, that's often what I end up doing. When it comes to old watches, sometimes the only way you can get the chance to handle them is to buy them.

Those are common enough models and you live in such a large, densely populated area, that with a bit of internet sleuthing you could probably find a preowned dealer (whether jeweler or pawn shop style) that has one for sale. If you’re willing to venture up to Boston or down to Philly, plenty of places to look into. I’ve done that sort of thing before, just to try on a few pieces.

Or check out a place like Crown & Caliber or Swiss Watch Expo with a solid return policy. Just read the fine print. Some places put stickers all over the watches, and the return policy is voided if you remove them. But even with the stickers, you should get some idea.

In any case, the answer is always the 41mm Seamaster. It’s a fantastic fit for just about every wrist. The new ones are way too big, imo.

I just got a 2531.80 last week (with @Annapolis kind help) and had the same issue… I’m in the Philadelphia area and found that Sansom watches has a 41mm quartz seamaster I was able to try. Andrew, the guy who runs it, is also just a great guy with what I’ve described as an “adult candy store” of a watch store.

Here’s a link to the watch I’m referring to:

I’ve done to Philly to NY trip maybe 50-60 times in my life and it is super easy on Amtrak. Philly is also an all around great city so make a trip out of it, if you are able!

I hope this helps.
