He seems to be an Aussie with a part-time residence (or affiliate) in Sarasota/Bradenton, FL (US area code 941).

    Must be nice! :D

You may laugh but this sort of thing is probably part of what's responsible for putting upward pressure on vintage omegas in general right now, meaning your toy boxes are going up because of them.

It's not a bad time to be holding quality vintage pieces, certainly a better investment than any stock market until the Europeans sort their collective shit out.

It does seem worthwhile to put some money into vintage pieces - buy original, quality and well priced vintage pieces now and you will probably do as well as treasury bills. Keep in mind though there is at least a 10% premium if not higher when you sell many of these pieces (ebay and various auction houses) so you need to factor that in the price at which you buy the watch(es).

You never know, in a few years we may have a private sale traffic here on par with VRF and have a bigger portion of vintage omegas avoiding the 'bay.

It would be optimal to sell in a forum like this populated by knowledgeable vintage omega enthusiasts. I have experience in online forums/bulletin boards (though that's not my field) and there are usually 2-3 "breaks" that have to happen to push it into the mainstream. Even then, forums like purists where a critical mass of vintage omega experts visit and post regularly, the FS section is not terribly busy. I think that's because many of the sales of nice vintage omegas go to the Asian/European markets and many of these forums are US-centric (at least the ones I regularly go to). Myself and others still have difficulty selling on TZ and a lot more ease selling on ebay.

I think part of it is pricing on Omegas, when you've got a Rolex Submariner 5513 or a GMT 1675 you can see 200 other identical pieces and what they sold for, then just tweak your price for optimism and condition. With the majority of the vintage Seamaster/Constellation line you're dealing with 30 variables before you even get as far as a price tag, and leaving it up to the market in an auction becomes an attractive option.

I've found that TZ is the place to sell modern and high end watches. While I like their vintage forum, it's not the place to sell many vintage watches. WUS had a very active sales forum and is based in Europe, and they also have a strong Omega following - but it's only a bit better selling vintage Omegas than TZ. If you want to sell a boutique or dive watch that's the place to list it, especially any watch under $1000. Like Mike mentioned there is no one forum that stands out for vintage pieces other than Rolex watches on Rolex forums.

Another quirk is that the white whale hunters strike quickly. If a desired watch pops up, it won't be around long. We have a variety of search methods to find the higher end pieces we seek.

It seems eBay is a necessary evil. You hope for a bidding war, and if you're watch is the real deal in great shape odds are you'll pull good money but strange things happen there.

I think if you have a high grade vintage omega then it is best left to auction - either on ebay or if it is really higher grade then christies/sothebys/antiquorum. I hope one day we will see a thriving vintage omega marketplace attached to a forum like this one but I wonder when that day might come.

Do you think there would be any demand for a Vietnamese-language sub-forum here at ΩF?
We'd be happy to provide this if there's a need, though you'd likely end up stuck as the moderator of it ;)
