ok... A potential last minute audible... I was all set to pickup the vintage black (already paid for it in fact)... And then I get hit by surprise by pictures of the FOIS Sedna... And all of a sudden, I'm second guessing myself... Forget the price difference... What do you guys think? Photos courtesy of @Robert-Jan 's Fratellowatches.com
Having only seen the Vintage Black in the metal, its not really a fair fight... I need to see that gold FOIS up close and personal.. Funny, I just stopped by the boutique 2 hours ago to check on FOIS availability. My first (visceral) reaction to the FOIS earlier this year was not entirely positive... over time, I've come to realize the sedna gold is just beautifully done on this piece. I LOVE the hands, dial plots and raised gold Omega symbol, those are super nice touches. I'm indifferent to the panda dial styling. I'll go ahead and take a flyer here... but only because you said ignore cost.... FOIS.
$0.02 CAD, between those two, the FOIS would take it. Though in truth, neither really grab me. I'd probably go after the new vintage '57 myself. I think it's a great rendition of the 2915 with a modern twist. http://www.fratellowatches.com/omega-speedmaster-57-caliber-9300-broad-arrow/ ...and I can't wait to see wrist shots of the Globemaster.
FOIS in sedna gold is gorgeous: an excellent option for a dressed up speedy. The vintage black does nothing for me. Actually I really did not understand why Omega diluted the "DSOTM brand" at Basel 2015 with all these DSOTM variations (vintage black, pitch black...??). I believe they should have stopped at the DSOTM and GSOTM, and start developing both watches as long term "iconic" sub brands within the Omega collection. I can almost forgive the WSOTM as a rather gaudy attempt to start a ladies moonwatch collection, but I still think it looks awful
Between those options, I'd choose the black vintage. Is the gold ring inside the Sedna dial a reflection or is actually finished in gold?
Neither unless you're buying to keep your place in the platinum globemaster line. In which case buy the one you will easily sell when you realise you haven't worn it in 12 months.
I love panda dials, I love rose gold (its wonderful for making pasty white Irish skin look less pasty), I love FOIS and this combines all three. Rose gold always looks classy rather than vulgar too, especially on strap, its just such a winner of a watch. Vintage black is a nice piece but if you have the Darkside its kind of a duplicate, but not quite as stunning as the original Darkside.
I tried the FOIS and the vintage. Quite a size difference in terms of case with the FOIS being a lot smaller. For me if money was not in the equation the FOIS is stunning. You have grey and black, which in my opinion are nicer than the vintage. FOIS on the wrist is stunning!
Oooh - a high class problem! My dealer has the Sedna FOIS in stock and it is a gorgeous peice in the flesh - under the spot lights and all the dry ice at a launch event it didn't talk to me but in the boutique one quiet day last week it really stood out. It's a sweet little thing - and that is my point - if that size suits your wrist then fine. But if you've already got the larger one in your collection - like you do - then this will look like it hasn't yet grown up, and you'll notice every time you look at it. I've talked myself out of buying the steel one on these grounds alone. I can't imagine wearing a Speedy to a formal event where gold might seem more appropriate unless there are astronauts present - and even then I'd prefer a ceramic! So, I'm not sure gold is the right material for a 'tool' watch. I'm finding that the ceramic Speedys are bullet proof for everyday use. I'd stick with your current order.
Of those two, the Sedna is the more striking watch on the wrist - I'm a sucker for a panda dial. And it can dress up or down easily.
I see the sedna gold FOIS as a very good alternative to a Daytona. Not really a tool watch or a pure dress watch, but a very classy statement piece, with a good dosage of pedigree/history. On pure aesthetics I think it is one of the most beautiful Speedies out there and quite unique.
Between the Sedna Black and the Speedy XI-45th LTE (a design that seems to have inspired the Sedna Black) I would go with the XI-45th on a leather strap or Ti bracelet, if there are any still available for purchase.
