Any thoughts on this vintage Omega Seamaster? Asking price is 1500 USD.

around 1963, Ref. 165.001; mechanical movement; some used marks as can be seen in the photos but the seller claims all parts (except the glass) are original and it was services a few months ago.

Looks like nice original 18K Seamaster- case looks reasonable for 18K, this ref has no bezel if you look at side views, movement looks clean with proper movement- if you like the reference looks like clean original example to me- and 1500 not unreasonable given gold value. If they can provide proof of service and some kind of warranty even better, fair to ask if it is being sold as recently serviced.
Crown looks original too.

Looks like two different watches in the photos. Be careful

The second from last photo is definitely from a different watch. Might have just gotten them mixed up?

echoing the rest, the inscription inside caseback is definitely not from the same watch in two photos. I’d ask a lot more questions or even do a video call to see the watch

I feel the high gold price has overtaken the collectible value of watches like this. If I were buying I’d want to do a quick and dirty calculation to find the mass of the watch, deduct a minimal value for the dial and movement and find the estimated value in gold. I’d want to get as close to gold price as possible and certainly no more than 10-20% over.

I tried doing that with the help of ChatGPT (taking it with a grain of salt of course .. seems high but then again the gold price is off the charts right now). here‘s what it came up with:

Material value (gold content):

  • 18k gold case likely weighs ~27–30g
  • Melt value of 18k gold at current prices (~€65/g pure) = €1250–1350 (approx 1400$)
