·I made it to the shop today and had it opened - I hope the pictures are clear enough because it was a bit dim inside and pouring rain outside so the light wasn’t great. The watchmaker said it looked clean and thought that the crystal didn’t need replacing and would polish up nicely. He quoted around 200 for a full service.
I’m just going to post all the pix even though some are a bit blurry because I had to stand on tiptoe to take them (I’m only 5 feet tall and the counter was high!). Hopefully they’re clear enough to make out details.
I see that it’s hard to make out the second set of numbers in the case back. I can take it back in tomorrow and get a better picture if necessary.
Thanks again for all the opinions! Still not sure what I’m going to do - probably take the advice to live with it for a week and then make up my mind.
My cat is my avatar because that’s the position he was is when I signed up. He’s a blue and white Devon Rex called Baggins because he’s a terrible thief.

·Nearly clean as a whistle under the hood. Honestly, this is too good a story to sell to someone else. I'd keep it and dine out on the story for years

·If you wear it much, remove the bracelet as those types of bracelets tend to wear down the lugs. As mentioned previously, a leather strap would look better anyways.

·It seems to me that the OP is an experienced collector of other items, and has probably developed a finely honed attention to detail.
I had a similar feeling when I commented about the OP's knack for taking the right kind of photos, that she was more well-informed than she was letting on. I see now that I was wrong in calling it a "knack" or thinking it was (polite) false modesty. It's nice to see that expertise and keen observational skill can serve a person well even in an entirely new field. It's none of my business but I hope she keeps and wears the watch—the story behind it is too priceless. It's like the watch found her.
