Opinions needed about restoring my father's Seamaster Deville

Good morning. This is my first post. Recently, my father gave me his old Seamaster De Ville. It is in need of restoration. I live in a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, so I would have to send it overseas (preferably in Europe) for this restoration. I'm attaching photos for reference. Some of the gold seems to have "peeled off" on the bracelet and the glass is heavily scratched and at there is a small crack on the glass on the upper-right corner between 1 and 2. In your opinion - should I send it to Omega directly or is there another restorer in Europe you can recommend ? Also, what price range would I be looking at, broadly speaking ? I'm not a well-off guy so I can't really afford dropping, say, €3000 on restoring the De Ville (also not sure if it is worth doing or not as I am not too knowledgeable about vintage watches, I own a vintage 1972 Omega Geneve mechanical watch but that's it, so I'm no collector). I mean if the restoration would cost say €1000-2000 I would do it as my father is 84 years old and it will serve as a memento, but value-wise I'm not sure how much the watch is worth and if it is worth restoring (I've tried looking online to get an idea of how much it is worth but prices seem to vary greatly). Any opinions about the watch would be greatly appreciated. I can provide more photos if you wish.

Welcome to OF. I don't have a specific suggestion for a watchmaker to repair the watch, but I can give some general input. As far as I can see, the watch looks legit, just quite worn. As you mentioned there is gold plating loss from the bracelet, and also from the crown. The bracelet also needs a bit of repair since I can seem some links opening up. The crystal is a minor issue, and can be replace for a small cost.

If you can get a referral for an experienced watchmaker in Europe, it should not be difficult for them to service/repair the movement and replace the crystal and crown. If you want to ensure that the replacements are correct and authentic Omega parts (as opposed to generic), then you will want to look for a watchmaker who has an Omega parts account. You can check this before sending the watch.

The bracelet is a separate issue. Personally, I'm not familiar with anyone who specifically re-plates watch bracelets, and this is not a service that most watchmakers will perform. Perhaps really all you need is a jeweler for the bracelet. I'm sure that jewelers must add gold plating to various types of jewelry all the time and I suspect it's not very expensive. It may not be perfect, but it will probably be an improvement.

Can't give you a specific recommendation, well one, our very own Al Archer, AKA Archer. He's in Canada but does plenty of work globally.

Really just needs a clean and service, replace the crown and crystal as previously noted.

The bracelet in this condition is pretty much a lost cause. Far more economical to source a replacement, new or used.

I personally would specifically NOT send it to Omega.

As far as it's value, to a buyer it's probably worth about 300-400€ as is, 400-600€ when repaired. To you, it's far more valuable and definitely worth having it repaired. For the watch alone, it should cost less than 500€, I think. A bracelet like that in good condition is about 200€. I'd personally not have any problem at all wearing the bracelet that's on it (after a little repair to the beads and end links) because it belonged to a family member. These watches also look great on a nice strap, which would probably be a little less expensive than a new bracelet or repairing the current one.

Gold-plated bracelets of this type do come up for sale from time to time. Whether you source one or change it out for strap, the watch will look terrific with a new crystal and crown.

Cleaning, crystal replacement and a new crown. New crowns will be gold plated as opposed to originals that were gold filled/capped. Might be able to find an original off Ebay, but sellers offering NOS (new old stock) which are still newer plated ones, so be careful on those.

Current not original

Bracelet is shot. Don't bother. Simple leather strap
