For my first "real" watch purchase, I'm torn between the more classic Seamaster (2254) and the more modern Planet Ocean (2200 or 232). There's a BIG price difference between the two watches and I just don't know what I'm getting for the extra money. ... Any input or advice appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jason

Actually a mint condition Seamaster 2254.50 and a good/average early Planet Ocean (Cal 2500 b/c) price is not that far. Mint 2254.50 is around USD 2000-2200. Early PO could be bought at USD 2400-2700 . The new PO is different story. For both you have factor in service budget.

You can not buy 2254.50 new since it is out of production. A NOS one would not be cheap.
Since my wrist is relatively small (7 inch), 2254.50 at 41 mm fit better. My PO is 45.5 mm, it's jut too big and I could not bear to wear it more than 6 hours.

I'd be leaning towards the 2254.50 myself, if I was going to buy a PO I'd go the 8500, but in that price range I like the 2254.50 more.

Go for the 2254.50. A Classic.

But - and probably not helping you at all - the perfect watch would/could actually be a 2254.50 modified with a PO bezel and glass. The parts are actually compatible with a little tweeking here and there. When researching to get the "super bleu" realized this was another mod that got my devious mod/franken-side going.

The super rare French LTD edition "Super Bleu". No longer in my collection.

Oh dear........that's one beautiful mod watch. However isn't it SMP 300 bezel?

Btw another reason to choose 2254.50: It holds value better than PO (especially newer one) except few Limited Edition such as 007 theme or liquid metal.

    Thanks!
Absolutely, maybe I was unclear - the bleu has a SMP 300 bezel - but when researching to to build the bleu, talking to a local Omega watchmaker, I got the info that a PO bezel actually fits on a SMP 300 case (not perfectly but OK) and the AR coated PO crystal can be used if using the SMP 300 gasket. It will be a future project - a black SMP with PO bezel and crystal.

You guys are awesome! Thanks much for your feedback. I totally agree with styggpyggeno1- The 2254 with the PO bezel would be gorgeous! ... Do it, Privateday7!

The price of the 2254s are going up. I may have to purchase one from overseas (i.e. UK or Japan) because there seems to be shortage of good to excellent condition ones here in the U.S. Been combing this forum and others but haven't found one that's quite to my satisfaction.

Am I justified in wanting a newer 2254.50 (i.e. with the Omega globe on the back case) or do you think it doesn't matter?

What about the PO 42 mm? ... Would you consider that one over a 2254?

I plan to trade my 45.5 mm PO to 42 mm PO. Haven't tried it yet, so no comment.
