I've been thinking of getting my speedmaster cleaned and serviced. My question is: there is a jeweler near by me that is family owned for more than 75 years and they service Rolex along with other brands.
So that is where I'm thinking of taking it to be cleaned and serviced, seeing there is no one close to where I live that it an authorized Omega service center. I feel comfortable with with these people versus sending it out to someone I don't know.

Servicing a Rolex and a Speedmaster are two different things. Are they well versed in chronographs?

try checking yelp reviews, see if that jeweler has a good reputation, and if anyone specifically left feedback for a service on a Speedmaster. I've noted that many jewelers in my area (San Diego) say they will work on any major brand mechanical watch, but that doesn't mean they have access to the right parts, nor the specific expertise. There are many good watchmakers around, finding them is another thing.

From personal experience, I can say "Amen" to this.

Many smaller jewelers sub-contract repair work or do minor work without proper training, so if you do use your local shop, be sure you know who will actually do the work.

You do know that Rolex makes chronographs too, right? ;)

...and I'd be even less willing to let the corner jewelry store work on one of those! :cautious:

So you would let them work on your non-chronograph Rolex then? Do you know this store and know they don't have a good watchmaker working there? Or are you assuming because they are a local place they are simply incompetent?

    Cheers, Al

Very good point you have there Al, Thank you for a good education and for your post about servicing you watch even if it does keep good time I really appreciate it. So would you have any advice as to a trusted place to have my watch serviced in Illinois?

I do. It's called Archer Watches (aka Al). I've shipped him quite a few from the States and it's not that hard.

Unless you have a Rolex. It may not make it back into the USA. US Customs will send it back to Canada.

Not too sure about them. Please see this from 2012:

I've seen similar experiences posted at other sites as well.

    Hope this helps,

That's true. Not sure if he has worked off his backlog from being out for a while. It's worth contacting him and seeing if you can, even if it takes a while. The 30-40 page photo documentation of the disassembly, cleaning, oiling and reassembly is amazing.
