In a recent post, a member of the MB reported on the theft of a safe containing valuables, car keys, vital documents, and the memory card of the CCTV. All occurring within about 5 minutes.

Recently, two fellows and the wife of the one fellow were in a friend’s jewellery store. They stood at a show case containing a display of diamond and wedding rings, dinner rings, eternity rings, semi-sets, etc. All brass and glass. The one fellow oooohed and ahhhhed over the contents of the display. My friend (for some reason, call it instinct), took note of the distinctive black athletic trousers with red piping down the sides worn by the one fellow, and the distinctive sneakers worn by the other fellow. Several days later, at 3:00 am, his store burglar alarm rang, notifying him of a break in. He phoned the police and made a beeline for his store. His main store window is protected by a retractable steel shroud which is rolled down at night, but his door isn’t protected. They smashed the glass in the door, and entered. The CCTV showed two men entering the store and making a beeline for the show case with the “expensive” display of jewellery, smashing the glass, removing the jewellery, gold and silver chains, etc. Fortunately, his expensive stuff was in his safe! By the time my friend got to the store, the police were there. They reviewed the CCTV footage to view one guy with distinctive black athletic pants with a red stripe down the side, and the other guy with distinctive running shoes! My friend had the name and phone number of the wife of the one guy, and gave it to the police! When I spoke to him several days later, he had not heard from the police.

I suspect these two dolts will be guests of the provincial prison system facility about 100 miles north of here for two years less a day. How could anyone be so bloody stupid? My friend estimates he lost about $10,000.00 (including replacing broken glass), in the incident. Good news, bad news, I guess.

Condolences to the fellow who lost his safe and valuables. And indeed, it looks very suspicious about the memory card from the CCTV system having been removed. Employees of alarm companies and related businesses must be bonded. So if it can be proven this was an “inside” job as might well be expected, then the alarm company insurance will likely have to pay up, not the homeowner’s insurance.
