“While the rest of the model line tried to carve a path in new directions, Omega produced two models exclusively for the Japanese market, that took a nostalgic step back into the past. These two models, the 168.0065 and 168.865 carried the vintage Omega logo on their dials in an era when even the Moonwatch had been updated with the new "modern logo", and resurrected one of Omega's most loved dress watch designs.” [..]

Thanks mate it was an interesting one to dig into, especially the flat dial 168.865 with its double stamped caseback and the very rare gold-plated version which wasn’t mentioned anywhere, even in Desmond’s excellent essay from a few years back, but then @Martinibianco goes and posts his collection of 4, including a great condition gold one. That sent me down a whole rabbit hole of Japanese auctions and vendors to find a few others. That’s one of the things I enjoy most about collecting Omega’s, finding out about a watch you didn’t know even exists after all this time.

This gold-plated piece there is exactly one of on OF, compared to dozens of CK2915s

Lovely article, thanks once again! May I add a little something though? You’re saying that only SS examples exist and that they all came with pie pan dials. I believe this to be incorrect, even though the exceptions are few and far between. Compare:

Only two examples I’ve ever seen though.

/edit: Sorry, your last reply popped up while I was writing my post @dsio

Ah its one of the headings, the 168.0065 is piepan only and has no gold dial. The second reference appears double stamped on the non-piepan and gold dials and if you scroll down a bit through the article you’ll see I actually used that photo and mentioned the gold version too. They are plated only, not solid from what I was able to find and all carry the 168.865 reference.

So the article refers to both references, the piepan and the flat dial, and they have separate reference numbers but the second one is double stamped due to sharing the case of the first.

Thanks for pointing that thread out though, thats the second one on the forum, I’d only found the first one and about 4 in Japan.

Incidentally these flat dials are often advertised as or discussed as 168.0065s, but every single one that has a caseback photo I’ve seen has the second 168.865 stamping below it which is what I’ve referred to these as in the article and IMO should be correct in the same way that the double stamped Seamaster Cal 551 Chronometer 167.070 should be referred to by that second stamped reference as its there for a reason.

Yeah, completely my bad. I was scrolling through it on the phone, it coincidentally stopped before the part about the flat dials started and somehow I didn’t realize it wasn’t over yet.

Surprised this sold for less than $1k. I was lucky enough to find one in good condition for myself a while back, and it's rarely left my wrist. The 1011 is just as, if not more precise than my 55X Connies, and the two-way quickset is quite fun to scroll back and forth through while passing the time.

I really think it is just that movement that puts people off, so much stuff is posted online and people think the Calibre 1011 has cooties so they don’t even look for them. If it were a similar condition 14900 it would be big dollars, and in many ways I’d prefer one of these.
