    Hi,
Is this a stepped dial on this 74 Speedmaster?
    Cheers Russell.

    Hi,
I'm not sure I have noticed that as I'm only in the process of looking at buying it. I'm also sure it's a stepped dial as I only have pictures at the moment but wanted to make sure that it was.
    Cheers.

I am not 100% sure but it does not look like a step dial to me.

It does not look like a step dial to me. There is usually a very noticeable "plateau" between the center dial and the outer track section.

This particular page is pretty useful for distinguishing the different 70s dials, so you can probably use it for comparison. I think it's pretty clear that the 74 dial shown on the thread is flat.

145.022 74-76 dome dial tall S drop r. In late -76 production about sept 77 the S dropped to the bottom of the p in speedmaster. The -74 has not been proven to come with a step but is currently accepted in low serial numbers as per MWO and 101. I’ve researched these heavily keeping track of serials and dial type and have not yet confirmed. I have confirmed-76 switch over.

FYI guys the step is on the minute markers not the subdials. @Raymondo5508 @GrapeFruit

What is a dome dial? Just a standard dial like on my mid 90's Speedmaster?

Yes. The step is at the minute markers at the edge of them. You can see a dome just like on your 90’s speedy.
There is no dome at the minute markers but a clear step on pre -74 watches.

Speedy mkii are flat with no dome or step but have the same subdials.

Yes I understand as i had a 69 and 65 Speedy with stepped dials. I'm looking at buying this with pictures only and it wasn't that clear. Many thanks for the clarification Foo2rama.

As others have said. That is not a step dial. Just a dome dial with terrible lume decay or the victim of a terrible relume job. Perhaps water ingress has some effect on the lume. The OP watch I mean, not the much nicer one shown directly above.

    Hi,
If I end up buying this watch, what would be the best thing to do with the lume damage? Get redone or leave as is and wear it for what it is?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Cheers Russell.

I would have it redone. There's nothing attractive about the current state of the lume IMO, so a relume wouldn't lower the value if I were a future prospective buyer. Plus, the hands are superluminova, so they'll never be a match as they are. I would get the dial and SL hands all relumed to match a nice vintage patina. James Hyman would have this looking top notch.

I’m not sure they are SL... I’d need it in hand, it could go either way. But I’m pretty sure they are replaced.

Speaking of hands, just noticed that the sub-dial hands look pretty sharp... Would be interested to see the SN of this one.

The movement serial is 3.91 million.
    Where is James Hyman based?

39.1m ;) which is late -76 production which matches the dial.
