Hi OF!

I am starting to look and learn about Speedmaster Mark 2´s with racing dials...(do not ask me why...😬)!
I have a hard time finding nice websites or info regarding this watch (no Speedmaster101...).

There are of course the lovely watches posted here on the Forum that are nice to look at and compare,
but some more info would be nice?

I have tried to look at the bezel regarding fonts and "dots", and I am a bit stuck here....
Maybe a timeline with reference etc?
Help...?

And have a lovely Saturday!

Different to the Speedy bezels, these are printed on the crystal . I have seen lots of different writings, sizes and font styles, but I have no idea about a timeline. Also repro crystals are floating on the bay.

kind regards, Max

Many (most?) Mark II crystals have been replaced over their 50+ year lives as they are prone to scratching and breaking upon removal. People haven't been too concerned on the replacement variations. But if you want to make a project out of it, go for it.

The darker the sealing mass, the older the glass. Wouldn`t be a dealbraker for me if the glass would have been replaced during a service. Same thing at the Speedmaster Mark 4.5 and 5.

Thanks Guys!

I read some salesposts here on the Forum, and the sellers described the part about the crystal/bezel.
No dents or scratches to the bezel!

A side note here-
Most of the salespost are so detailed, honest, and with lots of nice sharp pictures.
This must be heaven for a first-timer wanting to buy a vintage watch!

I did find some interesting storys about the watch:

https://www.fratellowatches.com/omega-speedmaster-mark-ii-145-014/

The watch had a short lifespan, from 69-75 (roughly).

The case is bit hefty, so maybe not everyone's favorite?
But cool lines and brushings, and it is a Speedy!
With the racing dial - it is a looker!

I do miss the outstanding websites and info regarding the ”regular" Speedys!
Not much info regarding differences with service/replacement parts etc.

It might be that I have to buy one, and get to know the watch?

😬

I have been looking at thes racing variant of these passively for a couple years. Would love to have one and I’ve watched the values on them climb slowly as I sit on the fence. They are truly a statement of their time and frankly far more distinctive and unique with the racing dial than the classic Speedy- the standard dial on the II is a bit boring within that flat case.
Finding one with original finishes seems to be the challenge as the majority seem to have beaten to death and reworked by wheel happy watchmakers. The other challenge is they seem to have not faired as well for water resistance as most of the Speedy I’s from the same era- most have dulll or nasty looking lume implying water ingress.

I wouldn’t sweat does and fonts on crystals with these- it’s hard enough to find one with factory bevels and brushing.

Correct fonts, as it appears in the catalogues of the period is that with the narrow C, first and fourth you posted. The other two are service.
It is hard to find examples qith original glass, because it is almost impossible to remove the glass qothout breaking it. I have an almnost NOS example and I was able to do it easily only because the seal was melted, elsewhere it breaks up.
Speaking about the example you posted, I believe the case is unmolested. DM me if you want to discuss further 😉

I was focusing on the "R" and "E" fonts, but the "C" is also different.
So now I know which are service parts - thanks!

And the one I posted pictures - that one looked very nice, but to early for me to pull the trigger...🙃

And DM´s will come!

Cheers!

Pictures!
The most important thing!
Despite the cool orange and red on these racing dials I find the grey tone to be very anemic and flat. It must have something to do with the way these racing dials age.

The languid grey strangely tends to work against the dial structure and make the sub dials appear as if they're just painted on the dial face as opposed to sitting within a recess. Makes the whole dial look 2 dimensional.

That being said, I have seen one of two of these racing dials that still have some depth to their grey and they really are a sight to be seen.
