You are a little late to the party https://omegaforums.net/threads/sot...rs-since-apollo-11.96800/page-10#post-1287472
I don't know what you mean by "historically significant", but there were quite a few nice pieces. A few 2915 did not get sold apparently. On this particular day, it is odd.
Nice pieces, old pieces, but nothing you cannot find away from Sotheby's. There are a LOT of Speedmasters out there. They're just not that rare or sought after. I'm kind of surprised Sotheby's even held this auction.
Agree with this A couple of interesting pieces but the rest sold for market value and are standard speedies Ck2915 didn’t sell as buyers of this 80k+ watch are extremely particular about condition and originality They are very rare and undervalued and because of this buyers perhaps leave hanging all but the best. Ps the are 2915-1 is butchered. I’m surprised they agreed to hold it
I just don't think these Speedmasters rise to Sotheby's standards. They're normally higher-end than this. Heck, Sotheby's can auction off anything they like. Rubber Gumby and Pokey action figures even! But their reputation is based on the quality of the goods they accept and the prices they get. This lot is not their usual quality. Some of those watches were in terrible condition.
A bit of a mixed bag from what I can tell, some pieces sold well when you take into account buyers premium etc, but others failed to catche the imagination it seems. Overall I think it pints to collectors wanting better quality pieces and being prepared to pay a premium if they find them while discounting the rest.
