I have handled the top 2 Longines chronos shown here and I must say wasn't all that impressed in the flesh. The first is a dressed up 7753 and felt unweildy and the second is AFAIK a piggyback solution so have more in common with the Speedy Reduced/Auto/Racing line. Both that I handled had issues. I would pick the Speedmaster MP given the OPs choice, even if it starts off more expensive, the residuals mean the when you come to sell you would lose more on the Longines option anyhow, those will routinely lose half their value as you walk out of the shop so you need to bargain hard when purchasing whereas as sensibly bought Speedmaster can cost virtually nothing other than servicing. Obviously the flip side of this is that the Longines models make for good second hand purchases, once someone else has taken the depreciation hit.
Thanks for finally chiming in, about 2 days too late.

Ah right, really wasn't trying to rain on any parades and my experience is obviously of two individual pieces and you obviously can't extrapolate that with the brand in general. If I was tactless I apologise but i must have missed the bit where you told us you had made up your mind and bought one.

Would it be too much of a coincidence that this is the watch you have listed for sale?
Hahahaha what a comedian. He likes it so much it is up for sale. btw for the benefit of @akshayluc420
the Speedmaster Moonphase shown above doesn't use the 7751...

Nope, it is. I'm thinning the heard and will be selling off a few pieces that I don't wear that often, or at all

Hi @padders , I am aware that the Speedymoon uses the Lemania 1866, I was referring to the Longines that uses the Valjoux 7751, apologies for the confusion. And whilst I do really like the Union Glashutte, there are others that I like more, and hence am selling it off (and others) to raise funds and make room for my grail. Thank you.

Since we are sticking to the two I think the Longines is cleaner and more elegant. I love the guilloche dial. I like my Speedy to be manual wind, no date and no moon.

Hello,

The Longines Master collectin are really nice watches and of and excellent price for what you'll get. I have a preference for the master retrograde but may be it's not you cup of tea. Ad for the speed/moonphase It'as a really nice looking watch but defintily i find that it's a mix between a real speedy and a moonphase watch. Louis Erard and Maurice lacroix make really nice moonphases if you can have a look at it.
The longiens l678 movement is based on a classic valjoux taht is a litgle common, the one I show is more interesting as for its movement.

The quad retrograde is on my list, just missed out on a nearly new one last Christmas.

Don't forget that it's pretty bulky. That's what bothers me a bit.

The Longines Master Moonphase is really not a great watch construction wise. I serviced one a few years ago and was pretty disappointed to see this brand sink to this level. The movement is of course great (7750 family), but the case was just a snap together affair, crystals front and back were oddly domed, had to buy a new dial for it and it was not a really well made dial.

I would say the Speedy is far and away the better watch in terms of construction....easily worth the extra.

Post farm much? Nevertheless you’ve reminded me of rubbishing some Longines stuff 6 or so years ago I had forgotten altogether.

Time makes fools of us all but long since my posts above I have acquired the following which I really rate. It’s exactly the sort of watch Omega used to make but have moved away from. I got it substantially under list but even at full RRP it makes Omega’s output seem expensive. This uses a 2892 variant with free sprung silicon balance and 70 hour reserve which makes you wonder what progress the Omega in house stuff like the 8800 really offers.

The standard speedmaster with a little age on it is a top 5 wrist icon, maybe top 3. I don’t like it as a moon watch. We’ve seen this before when a car wasn’t designed to be a convertible and tastes demand the designer chop the top off. The Longines better represents the spirit of a moonphase. More legible on the white gorgeous dial. And yes the chrono hand blocking the complication proves on the Omega it was never intended. In the business of moon complication, which I personally don’t care for, the Longines secures the nod. Ex that it’s step dial speedmaster all day for my dough.
