With something of a heavy heart, I'm going to offer my 2998 for sale. This is an honest watch and, as you'll all know, hardly common. I purchased it towards the end of last year from its second owner. He bought it directly from the first around 1995 who, as a show of good conscience, had the watch fully serviced including a new bezel and crown ::facepalm1::. So, that's its background.

The dial is in overall great shape; hands all original and correct. The tritium lume is there, having turned a grey/green. Text and AML are spot on. There is a small darker mark near the 10 o clock position of the minute register.

After purchasing, the watch went to Simon Freese for a complete mechanical service. There is an issue with the hour register hand not returning to 12. He has said he will rectify that free of charge but I've simply not got around to it. We can discuss that with any potential buyer.

The watch is remarkably original. It appears unpolished but has certainly been well used over the years. Despite having a replacement bezel and crown, the pushers are correct and it looks like the glass is original to the watch.

Yes, the Omega symbol is there, despite being very feint.

    IMAG1737.jpg
The case shows plenty of wear and minor marks but there is absolutely nothing major amiss.
    IMAG1738.jpg IMAG1739.jpg IMAG1740.jpg IMAG1741.jpg IMAG1744.jpg IMAG1746.jpg

The back still retains a very clear hippocampus and is also correct to the reference
    IMAG1747.jpg

Taking off the back, you get to see the real heart of the watch - the cal 321. You will also see it retains the original inner cover and the caseback shows plenty of service marks from throughout its life. Serial numbers line up perfectly and there is no hint at anything having been swapped or changed.
    IMAG1751.jpg IMAG1752.jpg IMAG1753.jpg IMAG1755.jpg

The watch comes on a black leather strap. I cannot tell you if the strap is Omega but it does retain the original buckle (that always quite amazed me). The strap will fit up to a 9 inch (225mm) wrist.
    IMAG1748.jpg IMAG1749.jpg IMAG1750.jpg

As I've just come home and decided on the spur of the moment to offer this for sale, due to the incredibly overcast weather, the photos are a little dark. Below are some older photos in brighter weather and alongside other watches for a better view of the watch. IMG_20180514_1735147.jpg IMG_20180107_1403110[1].jpg IMG_20180320_1853290[1].jpg

Now, to the bit at the bottom! I'm going to price the watch at £17500.00 reduced to £17,000. I think that's fair. Postage and fees to be bourne by the buyer. Obviously, I would love this to stay in the OF family so I would like buyers to have a presence and feedback on the site. Payment can be made by PayPal or wire.

Some people ask why you sell a watch like this, well, I've got some incomings and just been hit with a surprise expense. It's that simple.

Thanks for reading and thanks, OF, as always for the space.

Just to be absolutely clear, as noted in the original description, bezel and crown were replaced at service in 1995 (as best remembered by the previous owner). This is the reason for the pricing. Both parts can still be found quite easily though, as we know, the price of DON bezels continues to rise. Good ones can still be found for £2000, exceptional ones are much more. A crown should cost around £500.

Yes to be clear, the "careful "above was in reference to identifying bezels and not a reference to this watch, which I happen to like.

Its a watch needing a bit of hunting for parts but that is satisfying and gives the new owner a chance to choose just how far to go with the bezel.

May I suggest a few more daylight shots? The watch looks much better in the later photos!

It is almost impossible to find a 2998 these days - Good luck with the sale!

You were quite clear in your original description Jimmy. You stated that it was a "new bezel and crown" and made a 2nd reference to that effect in your sales post. :)

Bezel details (dot, serif & accent) are all clearly visible in your photographs as are the crown logo and teeth. Nice, informative sales post for a lovely vintage Omega Speedmaster.

    Good luck with the sale.

Thank you for the clarification, I thought I may have said something derogatory towards the piece. Not my intention especially as I had already suggested a trade with Simon.

I'll let you know the next time I pull one out of a barn/safe/drawer.

(I actually have a lead on a single owner ...)
