Guys and Gals!

The summer months in Sweden have been very nice, lots of nice days (and nights) on the sea and close to the waterfronts.
Enjoying food and Brewskis together with friends and family!

And therefore I have managed to stay away from Speedy auctions….😉
TBH, during the summertime in Europe, there are very few exciting auctions.

But this one came up on my radar, and I started to look at the few pictures that they had.
They looked promising, so I asked for more.
No reference nr, no movement picture, no picture of the inside of the caseback.

But the serial nr on the paper placed the watch as a 145.022-71.

The first thing that hit me was that the hands had been adjusted, really sad about that….
The dial, very promising, but to grade this one above Good, I had to have better (more detailed pictures), and I did not receive better ones.
The lumeplots are very attractive, without any loss or dirt/mold.
The bezel has only a few small marks, but quite dirty, I had to assume that it would clean up nicely.
The carrier ring is very nice and clean.

The case and case back are very very nice - the Star of the Show!!

The pushers and crown have the right amount of dirt, so they could be original?
No movement pictures, but based on the condition of the watch, it should be ok, and after the service it should be fine!

It had a 1175 bracelet and 640 endlinks.
The watch also had box and papers, and spare links, so a nice set.
And this could point to a one owner watch?
Some collectors (or first time buyers) pay a heavy premium for this!

My Do You Like the Watchometer revved upp a few notches, and I started doing my Masterplan!

With everything above, and only grading the dial as Good, the rest of the parts should be Very Good.
But the paintwork on the hand are a bummer….

Speedmaster101´s lovely chart places the value (Head only):
Good 4200 $
Very Good 5200 $

Bracelet, box and papers (and extra links) roughly 1500 $ maybe?

Action day started, and the pre biding was up to 3400 € / 3950 $.
The watch was on multiple platforms, so there was good coverage...I think that we were a few Forums members looking...😀

The lot came up, and then the room went BANANAS!

Lots and lots of bids, everybody shouting and yelling...
and after some time, the hammer fell at 6300 € / 7400 $ including the premium.

The winner was biding from the room, so he/she had time to assess the dial (and the rest of the watch).

Auction fever or a very very nice watch for the high price?

Enjoy the pictures, and please do comment as usual??

Thanks for bringing this up and the evaluation! I would agree, the room did go bananas. I put in my autobid of 3.6k I think? With +1 bid. That’s about 6k USD after conversion and auction fees. I was really hoping to win. Low estimate after all. Maybe that shakes things up?

I sold a minty CRS some time ago for 5k… I would say this STEPPED 71’ w/papers is definitely worth more… 7k sounds like a steal, not too high at all. It is a perfect example imo

BUT with the current market, I would shoot for a 145.012-67 for slightly more money. Define slightly? 1-2k more 😀

I did read the speedy101 price chart market evaluation. It is indeed getting harder to find a decent original speedy. They are in collectors’ hands so when a nice one pops up… bid high!

Guilty. I was actually thinking of bidding too, in spite of having two of this reference... However, at this level, I passed. Also because the repainted hands are clear evidence of work done to the watch, and knowing this, what else has been adjusted? Hard to tell on the back of pictures alone.

Well I feel like an idiot lol didn’t pay attention… and now I’m glad I lost. Minute and hour counter hands have their dimples covered! Good catch and thanks for the education! I need to edit my speedy checklist

Credit where credit's due: @hansaboy spotted it too as he mentioned 'adjusted hands' above. It's kind of unusual to see it like this, though. More often than not, repainted hands come with other adjustments as well. This watch doesn't bear any clear indications of other work done to it.

I did bid....... twice to the top of my range. I felt that someone had placed a very high autobid on this watch. The UK Auction House valued the watch on the low side at GBP 1,500 - 2,000 to lure buyers in for a bargain, only providing the sparsest of information and no internal pictures. E.g. they didn't even say it was a 71. You had to work it out.
Although there are many many 145.022-71's out there ...... this had box + papers and a correct bracelet..
If we're lucky we'll get to see the watch once it's serviced and cleaned up.

Very nice watch - the case looks to be in great shape. I agree that the painted hands would have made me wonder what else might have been altered, but not enough to prevent me from bidding. It's also nice that the papers are from Harrod's 😎

I do not feel bad about not going full throttle on this watch!
Everything looked really really nice, but the paintwork on the hands made me wonder...

And I think I also found a "wart" on the subdial...

People might get a bit carried away when they see the B & P,
and also the fact that the watch looks amazing....and they might miss the paintwork on the hands??

I had a chat with the auctionhouse, and they told me that there were many watch/jewelry dealers in the room,
so who knows who won the watch....
We have the serial nr, so we can keep an eye on it.....😉
