Chanced on this piece on my local forums.

Wondering what do you guys think about it?

I like the worn look on the bezel, think its a stepped dial?

Can't see the serial number from here, still asking the seller for information. Also comes with 1171/633 bracelet.

Selling is asking for about 3500 usd. Just serviced. Movement serial number is 47386718

    Thoughts?

    Not a step dial.
11 o'clock lug looks very soft compared to the other 3. (or could be a reflection which makes it look over polished?)
    Hand base paint looks restored.
    Chewed out bezel insert.
Looks like pretty deep end link grooves on the back of the lugs? (again, not the best pic).

    Okay-ish buy I guess at $3,500??

Need better pix to assess the true condition of the case.
Dial is nice. If Lume is original, this is probably the only thing this watch has going for it. Everything else is in pretty mediocre condition.

It is always better to pay up for a stellar example than get a "Deal" on a tired/mediocre one...

Golden advice as always. Thank you.

Admittedly the dial looks great along with the hands (perhaps too nice?) But I would prefer a step dial... I actually like the look of the bezel, being worn and all.

Ill be doing a viewing on this tomorrow. Will update with more pictures then :)

Appreciate the advice and feedback thus far!

You won’t get a stepped dial after 1974 so don’t look too hard for one on a later watch.

Based on the movement photos, I would take the "just serviced" with a grain of salt...

I think that it's attractive, even if fairly beaten up. I agree on the approximate $3500 valuation.

For your search, the last reference for step dials was 145.022-71. If you're looking for a step dial on an 861, you're then your options are a 145.022-69 or -71 (or -68, but it's rare and transitional).

Thanks so much. Yeah I do think it's abit more rugged with the bezel. I know people say it's beaten up, but I think it's pretty cool.

He's asking 3500 usd but the price is negotiable.

Is it my imagination or is there something odd about the pushers ? Could just be the angle the photos are taken at

I’d want to see post service pictures before I did a valuation.

FYI a step is on the outer ring not the sub dials.

IF, cause I think the markers’ color looks ‘enhanced’, along with the hands. $3.5k isn’t a great deal. And, I’d pay a little more for a cleaner example.

Once again it could be the pic's, but the underside of the lugs look very chewed up from a bracelet. I agree, there appears to be something amiss with the pushers. One looks bigger than the other (pic#1) and they look like they are seated differently (pic #2). Hands are unusually colored.
With bracelet and a full service $3200?

Yeap with 1171/633 and serviced. I'm talking to a few folks in OF who are more well versed at Speedys regarding this and I think I will probably give it a miss.

Thanks to all and OF for the invaluable advice!

I was in a similar situation before I got mine. Ultimately I decided I wanted a 3590.50. In my opinion it was all the look of the older Speedmasters (tritium) but usually in much better shape. Also less chance or repainted dials and other weird stuff. I ended up getting a ‘91 but I think the tritium ones went through ‘97.
