First and foremost, thanks to the mods for a dispensation regarding the 200 post rule so I can offer this watch, and thanks to OF for the space.
Up for sale is my 105.012-65. Serial 24,01x,xxx puts it squarely in range for a 105.012-65, production date of October 1966 and delivered to the motherland, Switzerland (the extract is included in the sale). I do think it's worth mentioning that I went CTRL+F'ing through the last year's worth of sales posts on OF, there have only been 4 105.012-65s offered for sale. Not to mention it is the only confirmed reference to land on the Moon!
I am only selling because I was lucky enough to land @watchknut's Ed White. I am still in the honeymoon phase, but I already know I will never reach for the twisted lug over Ed, so I'd like to pass it along to someone who will enjoy and wear it as it should be (and of course, I would like to replenish the watch fund!).
Down to the details...
Dial: Original, stepped AML with long indices and great, clean lume that holds up under UV (shown in pics) - only degradation worth mentioning is very minor at the outer edge of the 3 o'clock marker (only noticeable under a loupe)
Hands: Correct for this reference, but painted/color matched, so they do not hold up under UV I'm afraid
Case: Very strong, and very likely unpolished with brushing on the sides, and commensurate nicks and scratches (as discussed here https://omegaforums.net/threads/some-questions-about-my-105-012.65068/), sharp, fully legible, pre-moon seamonster caseback and correct 7mm/24-foot crown and low pushers
Bezel: DO90 in very good shape, with some chips (notably on the 'T' in 'Tachy'), but a really nice grayish/blue hue that is especially prevalent in certain lights/angles
Movement: Powered by the venerable Cal. 321, keeping excellent time (it is near spot on after 24hrs from what I gather, since it's hard to set the seconds) thought it has not been serviced in my possession and I am not aware of its service history (there is only one mark inside the caseback)
Onward to pricing...
As of March 2018, Speedmaster101 has a 'good' example (head only) at $9,200 and a collector example (head only) at $16,000. Though I don't have a crystal ball, I would not be surprised to see these figures revised higher in the next update (and of course, there is the impending 50th anniversary in just over a year to keep in mind).
In my honest opinion, this watch lives somewhere in the middle of the current range, albeit at the higher end. I have done some research and tried to think about this logically, and I am, for the purposes of this listing, calling it 'good + 70%' - detracting for the hands (which can be remedied), and the nicks/scratches to the case (which you could argue are a plus) and bezel, counterbalanced by the bezel color and the condition of the dial.
My asking is $14,000 head only ($9,200 + 70% of the diff from 'good' to 'collector'), and I am open to feedback and discussion.
The price includes fully insured shipping within CONUS (strongly preferred). Local pick-up is also welcome in the NYC area. I may ship internationally on a case by case basis, fully insured only and at the buyer's cost. I would prefer a wire for a transaction of this size. I can provide references relating to purchases from and sales to fellow OF members on request, you should be able to do the same.
Now on to the best part - the photos! I can furnish or take more upon request. There are also photos in the post I linked above in the 'Case' section.
Thanks for looking!
