So I’ve seen a Seamaster in a local jeweller ‘preowned’ section as the attached pictures. Unfortunately no images of the movement. Watch comes with the original box and papers. Dial looks original but I think the polishing fairies have had a recent visit to the case! Asking price is £795. Would hope to secure lower, but does this seem reasonable? Also any observations welcome!
I think that's way too expensive...You're right to be suspicious of the polishing and buffing faeries. You should try it on and see how it wears. you might find it a bit small on your wrist Rugbybodders. ....for a straightforward no frills automatic keep an eye on the private sales section here...you'll get a far more honest example
Cheers for the quick response. I’m in town tomorrow so will have a closer look. In the private sales section, thought you need 200 posts?
to post for sale but not to buy something...though obviously there are trust issues with unknown folk!!
Do you know what model number and caliber the watch is? Also, what would be a ‘fair’ value? The Jeweller is an Omega AD and I’ve got to purchase a new watch for my girlfriend’s 40th. Just thinking there may be a deal to be done if I’m armed with the right information.
need to see the ref number on the inside of the back casing, or at least the movement for the cal and movement number to date. ...I'd guess it was 1963-68 sort of era. 5xx or 6xx movement....but that's a guess. Value 275-350
Unless they want to knock off about £550, an even slightly fair price isn't reasonable... I take it you look at brick and mortar stores? It is unlikely that you will find anything there that members here would say is a good deal, sorry.
Thank you for all your advice. It’s quite hard to find any reference to the value of these watches and fully accept that purchasing from a high street store there will be a premium, but as you say, £500 premium is to much on an £800 watch!
To get an idea on value you should spend some time looking at asking prices here on the forum https://omegaforums.net/forums/private-watch-sales/ as well as SOLD listing on eBay.
The difficulty is trying to compare ‘apples with apples’ as there as so many variations! Still a lot to learn.....
Yes, a lot to learn, but you've come to a really good place to do so. Do yourself a favor and hang out here for about six months before jumping in on your first purchase.
Those jewellers do love their buffing wheels. Doesn't matter what it is, onto the wheel it goes to get it all nice and shiny.
