Omega Seamaster Ref. 589

Hello, I recently acquired this vintage Seamaster with the original guarantee papers dated March of 1967. It’s in decent condition and running well. I was just looking for more information on it and a possible valuation of what I could sell it for to a true Omega collector.

Thanks, Tyler

I don't know if those papers are correct for the watch, the serial range is good for this watch type 13.9 million being in the 1950's which is when I expect this watch was made. Yoy need to have it opened to check the number on the movement.

The ref of 589 make no sense to me either. If you search for Omega 14350, 14363 and 14383 you'll find watches of the same design.

Ref 589 is possibly the dealer inventory reference. Paperwork serial is approx 1953/1954.

14350s were introduced in 1954/1955.

Needs to be opened to establish what you have there.

Have you been given it or bought it? If so, the price you paid will be a good indication of value unless you think you got a deal.
Roughly speaking, if the dial is poor/average maybe £500-600. If it’s very good with no marks or damage probably £1000

"Ref." does not necessarily coincide with the standard Swiss case reference numbers used by Omega internally.

http://www.old-omegas.com/catde59.html

Please look at the catalog above. Totally different reference numbers. Sometimes this was done on a country by country basis.

If you are able to get a watchmaker to open the watch for you, you should see a Swiss case reference number that can be looked up.

Hope this helps,

Seems really low, I see the same head with a leather strap selling for around $2500. I just can’t find one with a steel bracelet.

Does the back pop or spin off?

Why ask what it’s worth if you know the value?

Is there an indentation somewhere on the back? I don’t see anywhere to pry.

Are you sure you've seen them sold for $2.5K? An asking price from a dealer is different to a selling price between collectors. The bracelet doesn't add anything here, firstly it certainly isn't period correct and secondly I have my doubts about whether it is a complete Omega bracelet or just an Omega clasp on a random bracelet ( my feelings are the later )

If I were to see this watch at a watch fair and be able to inspect it in hand then if the dial were good ( which is hard to call 100% from the poor pictures and under the scratched crystal ) and the case wasn't polished and the bezel wasn't scuffed up ( first picture it looks possible ) then I'd be looking to buy it for around €700-€800 max as I like this ref. Others may pay more or less.

Dealer asking prices are a mile apart from private selling prices.

Did you read what I said at all? I said I have seen similar watches without the steel band. So I’m trying to figure out the value with the steel band.

I assumed that dealers sold watches to collectors. I guess I was way off.

You asked for opinions on a selling price to collectors (in the condition it is at / unserviced / scratched / unknown state of dial). That is what you were given. I'd put it even lower at around 600€ including the bracelet...

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there? Try to sell it for $2400, see how far you get as a private seller with a watch in that raw cindition. If you get that money for it I'll apologise for my valuation and give you 10% on top.

Look at it like a 2nd hand car, if you buy from a garage it's always more expensive than if you buy from a private individual.
