Hi everyone, I am going to go check out this watch in the coming weeks, and I am wondering if it is a redial. Before I visit the seller, I would like your opinions regarding the watch. I am aware that almost all the SMDV Black dial crosshairs have been redialed, but I am still wondering if it’s at least, a good one. Also I am questioning the hands, are the original? Thanks in advance.
The Don Draper inspired SMD! Appears to be a refinished dial - not sure if this reference had a black dial crosshair dial variant. I had a dial refinished to look like this one on a SMD that I gifted and it looked great. It's likely not something that will appeal to a collector but you won't have a problem selling it in the future as there are a lot of people new to the vintage watch scene that want a watch that looks new but is 50+ years old.
This combination of black dial and crosshair is a rediallers favourite so you are absolutely correct to assume a redial. I have no problem with these apart from the crazy prices they command. At £300 maybe but at £1500+ absolutely not! These hands don’t have lume but the dial says they should so something is obviously wrong here.
Too much when you consider you could buy an all original SMDV for half that price. Maybe not black but at least it would be original. I paid £390 for this last year.
Typical asking price for one of the refinished black dialed SMDs, £500 too much for a refinished watch. Yes, the hands are correct for this type of dial which did not have lume. Dial was originally silver.
