Hello again everyone, I thought I would share some photos of my grandfather's daily Omega Seamaster Calendar 2849. I finally got some photos of the movement and I am dropping this watch off to be serviced by Kelly at Art of the Watch. I realize that this piece is nowhere near as valuable as the stunning 1940s chronograph but this will be a gift to my mother. I am just having a little trouble reading the caseback, I can read the 2849 but the second part is a little hard to read.

Cool, great heirloom.

Make sure they don't polish the case.

I’m inclined to say that it reads 4-SC

Yup, I’d say so too. @JSpdx the second part of the reference in the case back doesn’t really carry much relevant info for you, though. -4 is a sub reference possibly indicating a couple of dial styles / when it was built during the whole production runs of 2849s, and the SC means Seconde Central - central second.

And please have them remove that band and replace it with anything that doesn't have the one-size-fits-all spring sleeves between the lugs.

And see if they can source you a correct crown. Lovely heirloom. My fav reference!

Thank you everyone! With the service there are 2 choices for the crystal, either Omega or generic. I'm guessing people here would recommend the Omega part to be most authentic? Also, I noticed with a lot of the 2849's that they are 20 jewels and mine is 17 jewels, is that unusual or did it just vary? Thanks again for all of the help and nice comments. I would definitely change the band however this watch is going to my mom who remembers my grandpa wearing it with this band. It's kind of like wearing a bracelet of dull scissors that rip one's arm hair out.

The number of jewels is tax related. Some markets, the USA for one charged higher import duties on watches over 17j, probably some protectionist hangover from when the US watch industry was king (yes there was such a time). In those markets, Omega produced movements with a reduced 17j count, the 502 (and non date 500 & 490) are such. In practice it doesn't make much difference.

I'm not sure about this particular watch, but in some of these movements, the extra jewels are in the autowinding mechanism, and in my experience the lower-jeweled movements do sometimes have worn bushings that need to be replaced. This is not only for Omega, but for many vintage auto-winding watches with only 17j, including brands as diverse as Seiko and (US-import) Rolex. Sometimes a watchmaker will recommend replacing worn bushings with jewels, which is considered a standard upgrade and repair by some manufacturers, although strictly speaking it does change the jewel count of the movement.

Maybe. But 500 series movements have issues with bushes wearing in the winding system with 17, 19 and 20 jewels so I'm not sure its as big an issue as it sounds at face value. Or more to the point, the extra jewels in the Euro and ROW versions don't make the problems go away completely.
