At first glance it looks like a Constellation pie pan, but it's actually a Seamaster Pie Pan. Have you seen or owned it?

Yeap, they do exist and they are real, I own three with date including an exact identical one to the one you’ve posted. They’re my favorite watches in the world 😀

One thing about this though is that all of the others like this are 14K gold cases with 18K gold dials, this one being 18K is a bit unusual, I wonder if it came like that or received a different case at some point, would be interesting to get an extract on that serial.

Great. I have never seen anyone own all 3 models at the same time. it's a feat. Congratulations on owning them.

There’s more in fact, there is a stepped piepan date at three and a non date version, so 5 in total. There are members that have those too on the forum.

There is one of these (14k case) currently up on eBay. Not cheap at $7000 (bin, accepting offers).

in case anyone is curious:

The 7k wouldn’t even be unrealistic, if the watch wasn’t a pretty careless redial with a case polished beyond recognition. It’s a sad appearance, even more so in contrast to the stunning examples posted above. 😀

That is a very, very sad thing to see indeed. Shockingly bad redial on a watch where nearly all the value is in the dial anyway, and totally wrong hands, and awful case condition. There is another 2627 SMPP with stepped dial floating around that has also been redialed, not as badly as this one but pretty obviously still.

I actually didn't see that one when I searched, somehow. This is the one I found, though I'm not necessarily vouching for it, either. I'll leave the appraisal to you experts: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1444426159...CsRVpgvTba&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
See this 14k gold 2849 case is the same as mine, and Kyle’s and the various others that are known to be good that are owned by members here. Its a weird combination, 14K gold case with 18K gold dial, but it happens to be the way they are all found and correct as verified by extracts. I’m not sure an 18K case in a Cal 503 SMPP is correct, but I’m also not sure its wrong as the sample size isn’t that high.

There is another floating around that is clearly wrong and is in a gold-cap case as its original case was probably melted, and a stepped date at three dial was sold on ebay to a member here after its case was presumably melted as well.

This one was a barn find single owner watch - local seller who I met in a strip mall where we completed the purchase. If memory serves it was actually @dsio who called my attention to the watch. The bracelet is a solid gold aftermarket. And as they say dial, dial, dial.

Interesting how the minute hand on the step dial examples reaches all the way beyond the steps to the outside of the dial, while the other examples (and also step dial Connies, if I'm not mistaken) have minute hands that actually point to the minute ticks.

Sorry, nothing constructive to say. I just have to comment. I can't imagine meeting someone in a public place and seeing this in person for the first time, knowing that I have the opportunity to buy it but also that the seller may not go through with it. I think my heart couldn't take it.

Good lord, congrats.

Single owner? OMG.

Hehe, they sure are - but they might still be correct. The number of step dial SMPP 2627s I've seen is rather limited, unfortunately, so hard to say. 😁 But I was thinking of a phenomenon like the 2761 SMs, which very regularly had overly long minute hands. Anyway. It's not that relevant. Just drooling over some details of those spectacular specimen.

No I was both joking and referring back to a long ago post regarding these long SM hands

This one’s been listed on eBay for quite some time. Listed price of just over $7k is high IMO but there is a Best Offer option.

It happens a lot when you’re hunting watches instead of buying through dealers, and its a big reason why we’ve added the stories section because there are a lot of interesting tales of landing rare birds (and not so rare birds). Going to meet a total stranger with a large pile of cash either in their home or a public place is always a bit of a concerning thing but at least in Australia I know the other guy is almost certainly unarmed which is a bit of reassurance.

There is so much enjoyment that comes with wearing a piece like this knowing you landed it yourself through a combination of knowledge and effort rather than just cutting a cheque to an auction house.

Hence my frequent insistence that nothing beats "boots on the ground" treasure hunting!

If @hoipolloi isn't activated, you are probably ok, although he may be sleeping (the curse of us collectors).
In any case, hands are somewhat easy to source compared to dials.

To properly evaluate a piece, examine the buzzards viewing the carcass, are they noobies?
Or, are they the elite cadre of the collecting world nitpicking.

Droppings can be good if from the right table.
