Hi guys,
I am very new to this forum. I am currently looking for a nice vintage Seamaster and came across a good model online. The seller wants EUR 800 and the watch looks like it's in really good condition. Nevertheless, I think that the dial may be too good to be true as it shows no pattern at all. Attached you'll find some good pictures. What do you think about this offer? Is the price for the watch reasonable or should I try to lower it a bit? Also, can you spot any red flag on this watch?

Thanks a lot for your input.

Hello and welcome to the forum! My first impression is that the dial is legit. Case looks to be in decent condition. Can't comment on the price as gold plated watches aren't my thing. Maybe others can offer more insight.

More commonly seen dialed in black.

The white dial you're presenting is authentic. The asking price is high.

Thanks for your quick feedback. What would be a more realistic price for a piece like that?

The thing is, anything I see for example on ebay, etc. in decent condition has a price way above 500 - 600 Euros. Can somebody direct me somewhere, where I could find a similar model for a more realistic price? It seems to that the prices have massively gone up and I really doubt that they will go down.

you just have to be patient and wait, eventually a nice watch for a decent price will show up

if you can't wait it might be right for you just to purchase a watch for a slightly overprice, if you aren't going to sell it it does not matter that you are paying yo much

You'll have to spend either time or money in this hobby. If you really, really have to have one now, you must pay what the current sellers ask.

I picked up a black technical dial 600 about 18 months ago and prices were certainly very strong back then. I even recall seeing sales close to €1500 and that wasn’t due to desirable bracelets or accessories, it was often for just the watch head. Maybe prices have softened but I can’t find any completed listings so it’s hard to say.

Of course the plated versions will be significantly less, but €800 doesn’t seem completely ridiculous to me. I’m sure in an auction it wouldn’t get there, but I’m pretty sure it’d get 3/4 of the way there. So as others have said, it really depends if you want one now and are happy to pay, or whether you’d prefer to wait and put the hours in to potentially save a few hundred.

These technic dials are quite popular and not overly common so they certainly command a premium over standard silver dials. To find one at less than €600 you’ll likely have to wait a decent amount of time and be prepared to buy one quickly, possibly in barn find condition.

Gold plate is however the least desirable material so that’s in your favour.

To give an idea of the market, I’ve previously sold two of these;

I sold a ref 166.002 with technic dial around 3-4 years ago for about £650. The automatic 166.002 is a more desirable reference than the manual 135.011 but mine sold within an hour and I had a back up list of about 6 people, with some offering to pay £1000 if I cancelled the initial sale and sold to them instead.

I also sold a 135.011 with a small scratch on the dial a year ago for £650. Again this sold fairly quickly on this forum.

Well said. Many watch collectors seem to forget that not all enjoy 'the hunt', some just want to own a beautiful watch. For them spending hours on end looking for a good deal makes no financial sense at all when it comes to these sub $1000 pieces.
