I got this offer for a vintage Omega Seamaster 300 ref 165 024 and as you can see from the picture the bakelite bezel has been changed already with a non Omega bezel insert. Other than that, the watch is completely original. Question, is the bakelite bezel of the baby ploprof the same as for this model? Btw this watch has the desirable big triangle hour marker at 12 o'clock.

I was not aware that the 165.024 ever came with a bakelite bezel insert? AFAIK the insert on this reference was not made from Bakelite

It didn't. That was the 1. gen bezels on the 2913/14755/165.014.
The 16x.024 has a bezel insert made from a plexi/acrylic mold, filled with lume and a paint mixture - from the back of the mold - and then press "glued" on the bezel.

The OP one is very interesting. First time I've seen a complete bezel within a bezel ::facepalm2:: ... and no, the baby ploprof won't fit. Don't go that route
...and yes, condition, condition - which this one seems to lack bigtime. Keep looking..

Thanks for the info Kox. I know the condition is bad but if the price is reasonable, Its a great candidate for a sympathetic restoration.

I might be interested in the midcase if you buy and want to trade.

I guess it all depends on how much they are asking

I concur. If price is good, I'll grab it. If you decide to pass this on, please share the link or shop. Thanks

Yes if the price is right it would be a nice project. I hate for such a rare watch to go to waste.

I finally saw the watch and was able to negotiate a very reasonable price for it. I took these pics before sending them to my watchmaker for cleaning and movement overhaul. I hope someone can assist me in finding the correct bezel. Btw should I just leave the dial as is? I also got the UG Space Compax so it was a lucky Monday for me.

One thing i noticed is the gilt writing on the dial. Is this normal for big triangle dials?

I don't think it is gilt script (gold coloured), more yellowed original white script.

Here is a picture of the SM 300 after my watchmaker has done his magic. He found a bezel similar to the original and painted the numbers to give it that vintage look. After installing it, he then applied several coats of clear to make it look like it has that plastic layer on top. He also relumed the hands to a light brown grey color to match the dial hour markers. I'm really happy with the work he did on my SM 300.

That certainly looks a whole lot better and hasn't made any irreversible change from the original. I would be looking out for a suitable, vintage bezel, as a new, service item wouldn't look right either. Enjoy it in the meantime.

this might be slightly polarising, but I'd relume that dial.

I'm usually completely against it, but in this case the original dial isn't really attractive and it's one of those times where a sympathetic relume would increase desirability and value.

While looking for a vintage correct bezel, I think I would go with a watchco style service bezel rather than your watchmaker's work of art . The dial relume is a tough call. I have similar looking early 165024s and flip flop on this issue.

You really need at least a service bezel...
