Hello! After flunking on a purchase (please see "Newbie might have made a stupid purchase"), and bringing myself up to date with how to fish, sitting on the forums until 04.00, I am again on Ebay. I have taken it as my sole mission to obtain a vintage omega. I have about 450€ to spend, and I think I have found a suitable piece for myself - considering I live in Europe and all, and this one ships from Germany.

Gotta love the patina on this one - looks like an old sea chart. Probaby going to nickname it Nautilus or something like that if I ever get a hold of it.

But... I'm not going to make the same mistake - I am going to consult this fine community. Please tell me what you think of it.

    Year of manufacture ~1960
    Ref no. 14701
Serial no. ? 17553625 (the listing says this is ref nr. but this may just be lingual)
    This would mean a Gent's watch, self-winding chronograph, water-resistant.

    Caliber 562 movement.

Case is quite heavily polished, dial beyond patina for me.

It's been polished to hell and back, for starters. You have a nice photo of the reference number but you mistyped it. If you don't know the difference between the serial number and the reference number, you have some studying to do.

The 14701 case should have some pronounced bevels to the lugs. Your example is heavily polished. The dial looks in very poor shape too.

Here's one from the internet to give you an idea about the case finish

Everything is legit about it. Yes the case is polished but I think it's a very nice all in all and I like the patina on the dial. But it depends at what price you get it.
17553625 is the serial number on the movement that tells us that it was made in exactly 1960 I believe.
The model or reference number is 14701. I don't know whether the crown is the original one but the rest seems ok.

The dial of the watch you posted I would describe as in poor condition with possible water damage. The dial of the one I posted I would describe to be in very good condition. it is not really patinated at all although the lume has developed a nice colour.

After a HD search I've found pictures of this one that I actually bought for the 7077 bracelet it came attached to, The watch was toast with a rusted movement but the case looked to be unpolished. Here you can clearly see how the lugs were really sharp to begin with.

Definitely looks like water damage to the dial, patina'd, a bit too much

That dial isn't patina'd it's just rank. The case is too far gone as well for me.
Don't be too impatient, keep reading and take your time.

This is the best advice. There are plenty of vintage Omega's for sale at any given time. Keep hawking this forum, watchrecon and eBay (after reading up!), and a great example for a fair price will come up.
You'll know it when you see it ;)

Man, how many times do we tell people to just buy off OF!!!

Rule #1...never buy from a seller on ebay with those type of styled pics...they are polishing turd.

    Return and try again.

Just wait and buy from an OF seller.
