Taking my first tentative steps towards purchasing my grail watch.
Pretty much decided on 166.010 with quickset date, onyx insets on the markers and bor bracelet in great condition. Or possibly the chronometer equivalent.
Boy is it difficult to make a decision!
I’ve seen a few on eBay, but I’m a little nervous spending so much money on something I’ve not seen in the flesh.
Also the prices seem quite high. Any thoughts or recommendations or is it possible to get one through this forum?
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Apologies, but not familiar with forums. How do you look at Omega’s for sale?
What is the difference between sales and private sales?
Regards
Keith

Good choice 👍

Here’s mine

I’d go for one with a 565 movement. Very reliable and accurate and easy to service and source parts. The quick date set is still one of the best around.

I’m not sure a chronometer would add to the pleasure and tbh, with a 565, probably unnecessary.

‘Private Sales’ is generally collectors (like me) off loading watches that are rarely worn. ‘Watch Sales’ are generally dealers in a bigger or smaller way. If you look on ‘Watch sales’ @nanjingcigaretes generally has the type of watch you’re looking for.

You should also look at Chrono24 who seem to have quite a few.

I reckon you can probably find a decent watch with a good dial in the £500 - 700 range.

Agree with above. These were quite popular in Japan so there are many on ebay from Japanese sellers I would search there also. Many of the Japanese sellers on ebay are quire reliable. When you find something feel free to post here for opinions before buying. Good luck!

Great choice, they’re excellent watches. For a good one with Boar I think £500-700 may be a little shy but not a million miles away.
No idea what country you’re in Keith, but bear import duties in mind if buying from abroad. In the UK for example I always get changed c.25% when buying from Japan.

Also, take your time. This ref is plentiful, but finding one in good condition at a good price requires patience. If you rush it, you end up paying a premium (that might be fine for you if you want it quick) or compromising on quality.

Great choice. I have the elder sister 14779, which is the precursor of the 165.010 (version no date of the 166.010) and it’s one of my favourites. The ribbon dial gives it another small kick which I really love.

Don't forget the far superior 165.010, so you don't need to stare at the ugly asymmetrical dial with a date window. 😉

And I actually prefer the 009 models, TBH.
