Watching the men's 100m final today in track and field I noticed the photo finish info section had the equipment used to calculate the 5 thousandths of a second margin of victory. Anyone know why the legs of runners are so distorted in the photo? I know the chest is used to mark when the runner officially crosses the plane (not their head or feet) of the finish line so that would not be distorted, but the rest looks so odd. Apparently for Paris this thing can do 40,000 images in a second compared to 10,000 before. Impressive stuff Omega!

It's a line scan camera. The image you see is a composite made up up of columns of pixels with each column separated by the scan rate of the camera. This introduces distortion of the parts of the runners which are moving, that is, the runners arms and legs were not captured at a single instant in time by rather over a small periods during which they moved (obviously that applies to the whole of the runners body, it's just the arms/legs are moving somewhat faster than the body, if that makes sense).

Put your running watch with a seconds hand on a scanner and take a scan of it...you’ll figure it out then.

Thank you. When they said it can do 40,000 images a second I was wondering how there would be image distortion for movement with that fast of an exposure, but now it makes more sense as I was thinking as an area scan camera ("regular" cameras).
