    Hi Omega enthusiasts,

just missed this Omega vintage watch from the early 50ies on the bay (bid EUR 15 too low).

Such a nice patinated dial and the red second is a star!

I am really p**** right now.

Please tell me that the red second is not original or that there is anything else which is not appropriate :)

    Best. Thomas

I had exactly the same one some years ago. It had a red second hand but I can guarantee it was original.

Well I sold it 10 years ago when these kind of watches were worth 250 euros to buy another watch.

Should you find a picture, I would be happy to see.

Do you enjoy your aqua terra?

I'm at work, I'll try tonight at home. The aqua terra is beautiful but the coax is shitty IMHO

No it's not that. the balance staff broke for no real reason. Omega told me that the whole balance was to be changed. more than 500 euros. I finally found a spare balance wheel for 150 euros. Actually co axial looks more like a device to have watches repaired only by Omega than a real improvement.
The best accuracy and amplitude I got is on a 1012 which is my favorite Omega movement by far.

Does not sound too good. I purchased a Seamaster 300 57 Limited last week but did not put it in use yet. it has the cal 8806. Thought that a watch with a new movement should be more robust than my vintages.

Balance staffs don't break for no real reason. Can you tell us more details on this, like was the watch dropped, and what caliber was inside?

    Hi Archer

That is what is weird. I never dropped or bumped this watch. If I had, I would admit it, but generally I took great care of it as it was my first expensive watch. The caliber is a 2500. One day it stopped for no real reasons. that is sad because first of all it's a gorgeous watch, and more presonnaly that was a gift of my mother who died last year.
i'm going to ask and Omega friend to put the new balance on as I really don't like working on coax.

Omega told you specifically that the balance staff was broken when you sent it in?

Would love to see a photo of the broken staff. Modern balance staffs rarely break in my experience, so this is very unusual. Since the staff is not part of the escapement, the comments about co-axial being "shitty" because of a broken staff are puzzling.

Staffs can certainly wear if the watch hasn't been serviced in many years, but honestly I'm not sure any co-axial is old enough to have a staff that is so worn out that it would fail in it's own. Most likely scenario is damage from mishandling - co-axial balances are not easy to remove for the uninitiated, so it sounds like a good idea to have your friend do the installation.

Staffs don't break "for no reason"...there's always a reason. Unfortunately many companies, like Omega, no longer sell staffs as a separate part, so you must buy a balance complete, or look for a used balance where someone has damaged the balance spring beyond repair, and swap the springs. All part of the dumbing down of watch servicing by the big brands...
