Omega Planet Ocean vs Rolex Sub

Yah good comments. Btw I’m just shooting the breeze because I won’t be buying another watch until 2023, unless I get a big unexpected bonus next spring.

Also, I’m sure most on this board know this, but you can get a 39.5mm PO with a steel case for around 4500 or so at gray market price (it’s like 6400 retail). That’s a great value. You pay a big premium for the ceramic case.

I’m surprised the ceramic PO 39.5 was still available — they kinda disappeared from major ADs.

Having both the Sub and that same model PO however, I’ve been wearing the PO significantly more often.

I don't think I've ever thought about what a watch will be worth 10 years from now. Its so arbitrary and random that trying to think about it is a waste of time.

Now that this thread as brought up that thought in my mind..
The 114060 was released in 2012, 9 years ago now, its still ridiculously expensive at around 12k but we're also still in the Rolex bubble.
Look a little further back and the 14060 is up to around 9k now, still increasing as the years go on.

But if the Rolex bubble pops, as all bubbles eventually do, your "investment" will deflate.

I get enough stress thinking about which stocks I should keep, sell, and when to sell. No way am I gonna bring that into this hobby.

@Edgeworth : This one? 215.92.40.20.01.001 (https://www.omegawatches.com/en-gb/...ial-master-chronometer-39-5-mm-21592402001001)

If so, they have been on sale in the UK before so you might be able to get one (much) lower than retail if you shop around or are patient. I know I could've picked one up a little while ago at about 34% or so off MSRP. Although it sounds like you are US based so not sure the stock clearance translates across borders.

thanks, I’ve seen for around $8k (about 20% off) on gray market and used sites, but never 34% off

good points. I’m still sort of new to watch collecting and this board. It seems folks here don’t discuss prices or value much, or maybe it’s even a bit tacky to do so.

for me, considering economic value is sort of an occupational mindset that maybe I need to get away from for this hobby. Still, I don’t see why value shouldn’t be at least one consideration in a watch buy decision.

My hunch is that there are about 3 brands that hold their value better than others and can even be expected to appreciate, across all their models. Otoh, your Aqua Terra or Diver 300 is clearly not going to be worth as much or more in 10 years as when you bought it new, unless maybe you stumbled on a great deal. Also I’m not as convinced as others that the current Rolex bubble will burst, unless maybe there is a huge economic downturn that hits all luxury goods.

I think about value at the time of purchase, as in is the watch worth the asking price? Can I get a lower price somehow? Would I rather have something else for the same price?

I never buy a watch with thoughts about how much I could resell it for down the line. Heck, I've never sold a watch period.

I think people around here dont talk much about price since Omega watches dont have insane price fluxes or inflation like Rolex and the such. Just go on Omega's site or Chrono24 and you'll have a general idea of how much the watch costs.

It's refreshing to read about watches here because the discussion is about watches and not "Value".
