Hi,

I'm new to the vintage omega game but love the constellation pie pan. I've found this one ref 168.005, photos attached, for £2,700. What do you think, is there any immediate warning signs and is this a reasonable price?

Thank you!

The watch looks fine to me; case has been polished and some age spots on the dial.

2700 is much more than I would be willing to pay - even if it were recently serviced with an original bracelet.

I think this is an easy pass at that price.

Welcome to the world of vintage omega. It’s a minefield but you’ve done the right thing coming here first to ask questions.

The watch is original and looks to be good condition. The dial has some pitting and the case a few scratches. However looks relatively sharp so clearly not been polished too many times.

It’s a gold capped/plated case. I always get confused which is which. Other members will confirm. Not the most desirable but if you like it then that’s all that matters!

The price is up for debate. I’d say for this particular model it’s not worth it. But everyday pie pans seem to be going up and up. I a few members are still of the strict belief that anything over 2 grand is overpriced. I can understand that as it’s still the same watch it was 5 years ago but the market has changed… my honest take is from a private seller you should be able to get a mint example between £2000-£3000. This would be a watch with a sharp defined case, no pitting on the dial etc. maybe a bracelet in some cases.

Dealers will try and sell you pie pans anywhere between £3000 and £4500 now for a 168.005 with a silver dial and steel case.

In my opinion this specific watch you’re looking at is overpriced and the dial condition isn’t good enough for me to want to buy it.

Personally I’d hold out for a mint example (as mint as a watch from the 60s can be)

If you’re not that bothered and the watch is serviced and you just want to wear it as a daily and use and abuse it then you could do worse than this example. Just depends if you’re happy paying that money.

EDIT: had a more detailed look at the pictures and the top of the lugs look more polished than I’d originally thought. Case has definitely seen the polisher a few too many times

Welcome @jsmith
Compliments on your good taste if you are looking for a dogleg pie pan.
As above, the dial looks correct but has some age/moisture related degradation.
However, the case on this one is really quite soft and because of that the £2700 asking price is utterly ridiculous.
Patience is the key - check the private sales section on OF and set up alerts for auctions and the like.

The watch looks legit, the condition is mediocre. I don't think I'm going to comment on price, this is a common enough reference that you should be able to figure that for yourself.
