So, I have the typical tool with the probe on one side and a small two prong "fork" on the other... I am terrified to put that on my new SM300MC to put on a NATO strap....
What is the preferred tool to remove the strap/bracelet?
That’s the best tool. You can put masking tape or microporous surgical tape around the lugs to protect them from scratches if you are worried. Alternatively you can remove the springbars with dental floss (google it), which gives a little more control although there’s always the chance they will spring out all of a sudden and scratch the case. Finally if you purchased the watch from an AD or OB you can take it to them and they’ll be happy to change the strap for you - that way any scratches will be their responsibility, not yours.
I did purchase my SM300MC from AD (on-line), I am 3 hours away from either AD/OB. I like the dental floss removal videos.
the best process for putting the strap on is still using the fork?
You may want to try using something like this: W&S Spring Bar Plier Tool - to... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CKB3LR8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
