I thought METAS certification was their alternative to COSC. Even Tudor is making Master Chronometers now.

Yeah the Hodinkee piece suggests that this is an evolution beyond METAS, setting sites on COSC—and is a logical step following last year’s introduction of the super-tuneable Spirate system.

Yeah I think it’s them doubling down on their niche as the techy nerd brand in their sector. (Which is part of why we all love them.)

I have no idea, of course, but following Hodinkee’s lead (I’m generally a fan of their content) I’d bet that this portends a wider use of Spirate. This new, way more intensive, constantly-monitored testing, will allow them to really deliver on the promise of that system.

Funny that they chose to drop this right before Watches and Wonders.

Great insight. Omega has a solid strategy releasing news ahead of next week. I mean, shoot- they probably kept me from buying a new release from Tudor by getting me to place a full deposit for the white dial speedmaster.

Looks like a new alternative to COSC that will be open to other manufacturers too, but it’s an Omega “product,” so to speak?

I saw that a few minutes ago.
Most interesting indeed from an Omega point of view, especially given the backdrop of the development of Spirax.

The big thing i take away from it is that it sounds like it's all inclusive and for any brand to submit wrist watches for Chronometer testing regardless of origin.

The reality is that Rolex takes up the vast bulk of COSC capacity.
There's certainly some room for more independent testing within the testing industry which have the necessary credentials.

It's a bit like the old saying.
If you owe the bank 1 mil, they own you.
But if you owe the bank 1 bil, you own them.

With so much Rolex capacity going through COSC compared with all others combined. It could be fair to say that Rolex virtually owns COSC. From a certain point of view.
Also COSC is merely becoming a preliminary testing centre for Rolex bare movements before they case up the movements for further Rolex in-house Superlative testing.
