just received a old stainless deluxe with the 505 caliber movement.
the dial has become a nice champagne colour

howevdr the pie pan dial concerns me as the edges are crisp near the top and bottom, the edges between 2 and 3 and between 8 and 10 seem to be more rounded.

was this common for the time
understand the watch was picked up in the states by the previous owner

Did you notice that before you bought it? Hope you didn't pay to much for it.

I take it from your response it is an indication of either a redial or worse may suggest franken

Looks like a redial to me. De Luxe Constellations are always solid gold too. 505 could be correct, what´s the case reference 2852?

It was repainted with a thick coat of paint so the 12 edges of the pan got soften like that. Wrong font type , crude printing that misalligns with the star and arrows, and no Swiss Made. The case appears to be a 2852 but got polished down too much. 505 is correct for 2852 case so it may not be a franken but pictures of the insides are needed to determine that.

Also possible that it was not a pie pan to start with...

Very true, and even worse than redial, I'm afraid.

I can only but agree, buying a vintage watch is like walking a minefield these days, the expertise and support freely given in the forum is astounding in its breadth and generosity and I wouldn't even contemplate a purchase without first referring it here - 20:20 hindsight is easily acquired though, I do hope it's not too late for you to contact the seller and come to an arrangement.

I have been in touch with the seller, and have decided to return it. A little more knowledgeable.

with a little more knowledge, I have decided the piepan for me is a 551 Caliber. I will definitely be more thorough and less impulsive on the next acquisition.

At least you could return it, not always possible.
