well, @mutha1966, if you like round edges this is the watch for you.
Unfortunately, the watch didn't start of life with a case as heavily polished as this - the lugs and bezel should have clear sharp edges.

The dial is a bit odd - Omega did produce off-centre lettering in this era but the script looks faded as though the dial has been cleaned.

These watches haven't reached their peak desirability yet and $1000 should buy you an absolute mint example.
This watch, in this condition is priced at double its value (at least)

The case is supposed to have sharp edges, it is round due to polishing. This greatly hurts collector value, but you may like it that way.
The rest looks good.

this is what it should look like - pic of the reference in good condition from TheGreekPhysique OF sales thread - also priced at $999 at the time

Note the lettering is also off-centre but not 'vague' like the example you show

I suppose I'm not very good at picking them. Does the market have more options around the holiday period?

That one is polished out of its little mind. Someone got way too happy with the power polishing wheel! None of the four lugs have the same contours.

You can do better and you will given the fact that you are learning through your inquiries here. Dig deep in the Forum search for knowledge.

If you are able to determine detailed Omega watch model names and numbers then Google images can be your friend to find additional examples to study

Plan on spending months (or more) looking for a watch that a) you like, b) is fairly priced and c) is in good condition. You can find a watch faster if you are willing to give up a), b), or c).

In the 9 days you have been on the forum you have come up with several watches that fail conditions b) and/or c), and others have recommended watches that fail a). Hunting vintage watches takes time. It is normal, you are fine. You are learning. Enjoy the process.

Agree with wagudc, + it depends if your only option is a connie or not. You should determine a price range, a style, automatic ou manual winding.
here's a good exemple for 450 euros. Only the hands a not correct. Sharper case though not perfect.

You can find correct hands on eBay or elsewhere
