Hi all, Considering a purchase of the Omega pictured below. I've been trying to improve my eye for originality and finding faults with vintage Omega, but it's certainly not the brand that I'm most familiar with. What do you all think of this example, and do you have any concerns? There are a few minor scratches on the caseback, but I'm assuming these are fairly superficial and could maybe be buffed out without affecting the integrity of the case? Comes with an original BoR bracelet. Crystal is original with the Omega logo. I'm waiting on pictures of the movement. Seller hasn't provided me with the reference number yet. Would this be a 168.005? Thanks again OF, -J.
@jshaw083 Case looks very sharp Dial looks correct. Painted indices would suggest a late 60s 168.005 with a 564 movement. Unusual to see a 5-row BOR on a Connie of this era. Nice watch.
If it is powered by a 564, there are chances that the hour markers' tops are painted with black paint instead of onyx inserts and you should pay accordingly.
Re: the bracelet, unusual in what sense? Likely not the original bracelet? I don't know much about Omega bracelets to be honest
How can I tell re: onyx vs paint? I can't see the watch in person before purchasing it. Seller is in a different city
Pics aren’t great but if you compare your watch to @seekingseaquest ’s watch the black on the indices is flat and doesn’t intrude into the indices. Yours @seekingseaquest ’s
The 5-row is more usually associated with earlier references and the squarer 7-row with later references. It doesn’t mean it isn’t possible that it was original to the watch as bracelets were bought as extras at the point of sale.
Not sure if I fully understand..So Onyx is the one that doesn't intrude into the indices? Does black paint imply that it is not original, or that was just a different dial version that Omega had made?
I presume you are thinking of the 168.005 doglegs with a 564? All of my 168.010s with 564s have onyx inserts. Although as Hoi says there are dogleg 564s with onyx too.
Yes, it was the late doglegs I was referring to, although apparently I was incorrect on that as well. Always something to learn, 20+ years in.
So in this case, the buyer wants to meet in person. He's refusing to ship the watch. Which is problematic since I don't live in the same city as him. He does seem like a genuine watch collector (has ~ 10 other watches), although he tells me he bought them all locally, and isn't a member of any forums, so he wasn't able to provide any references. Overall he seems nice over messaging. I'm wondering if you guys have any advice on how to facilitate the transaction. I'm going to have a friend meet up with him to pick up the watch. I've looked the watch over in detail via pictures. My friend will look at the movement and confirm the serial number is present. The seller even offered to bring it to an Omega AD and open it there in front of my friend prior to purchase. Should I be using a particular payment system like Paypal for protection in this instance, given he doesn't have any references? -J.
