OMEGA Constellation 1683004 - Expert eyes - condition, dial, authenticity & any red flags?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering an Omega Constellation “Pie Pan” and would really value your expert opinions before I move forward.

What I know so far

Reference: 1683004 (french case)

Caliber / movement no.: 561

Case material: solid gold - I can see hallmarks on the case, but I’m not a specialist.

My initial assessment
Overall it looks decent to me, except for the dial: there’s visible spotting/aging. Do you think a careful professional cleaning could improve it, or is it likely too far gone and better left as-is to avoid damage?

Small doubt about the “SWISS MADE” text
On most photos the “SWISS MADE” at 6 o’clock is barely (or not) visible, yet on the last photo it appears very faintly. Could this simply be angle/lighting and acrylic-crystal distortion, grime at the dial edge, or is it a potential redial/retouch where part of the print has faded or been polished away? I’d appreciate your take.

Questions for the experts 😉

Authenticity/originality:
Do the dial, hands, markers, crown and crystal look correct for this reference? Any signs of a redial or replaced parts?

Material: Does the box look like a true gold dial or just gold-colored?

Condition red flags: From the photos, do you see over-polishing, moisture damage, rotor wear, corrosion, or anything else that should give me pause?

Thanks so much for your time and any professional insight you can share. I’ve tried to research as much as I can, but I’m not an expert, and I really appreciate the guidance!

Welcome @vincentdmz

The dial looks correct but heavily patinated.

The case looks very very heavily polished and the lugs may even be bent backwards.

It’s always exciting to find an unusual watch but my advice would be to pass on this one

Here is a link to another French .004 to compare with.

Thank you, @Peemacgee.

I’m not a professional, so just to understand: if it’s polished, what’s the actual issue—purely aesthetic?
You’re right, it’s patinated. Is it feasible to clean/restore it while keeping some of the patina?
Also, is €3,000 a fair price?

Maybe last question, is it easy to find a similar model ? I'm a big fan, and I would like to find one. I searched and it's not easy, I can wait few months of course.

Thanks again,
Vincent

This one’s the same as your watch - rose gold, 18kt: Omega Constellation 18ct Pink Gold 1683004 (same no. as on the inside of your caseback too). And same calibre (561) as you point out. Your serial number puts it at 1966 Omega serial number decoder. Date an Omega by serial number, calibre or model. Can’t see the crown fully but it looks like the right one. There are a few scratch marks on the rotor, but it doesn’t look as if they’re from wear (there aren’t any corresponding wear marks on the inside of the caseback.) Not sure if the black caseback seal/gasket is missing?

So it looks good to me from that POV. It does however look like it’s been polished quite a bit - note the rounded lugs (bent?) and case; they would have had sharper edges when new. Depends how much that bothers you. To me the dial looks like honest and original. But you might want to try a MOY check. Along with the spotting/patina, there may have been be a bit of water ingress around 5-6 O’clock that’s left a stain. Difficult to tell. Doesn’t look as if the movement’s been affected though. Again, depends on how much it bothers you. If it doesn’t, I wouldn’t get the dial restored unless you want it looking like new. But doing so would devalue the watch if you ever plan on selling it on. As you point out, you might not be able to see Swiss Made because of the distortion through the crystal. Hands and indices look good. Those look like original black onyx inserts, but it’s difficult to see. I think it’s a nice honest watch! Other members more expert than I will have a POV too. Good luck with it.

Cool watch, but it's in well below average condition. It's up to you, but personally it wouldn't give me any joy, especially since it's meant to be a dress watch. Due to the condition, the value is easy to determine based on melt.

If you look at the lugs and the bezel on the one I posted, you will see that the one you are looking at has (more than) lost all definition.

The lugs should be squared with clear facets and the bezel should have a clear facet too.

(The rose gold one in the link isn’t that sharp)

Gold prices are high, so prices for gold watches are all over the place at the minute but €3,000 for this watch is absolutely outrageous.

If you are not set on a French cased watch :
The ‘original’ Swiss reference is 168.004 but you can also try 168.5004 (the English version)

I’m afraid you picked a bad time to buy a gold watch and patience is key to finding a nice one.

'MOY' test and sharp lug and case facets for reference 😁

A nice watch but very different case style.

I'm not feeling it either. Sometimes ( actually quite often ) an imperfect watch can win me over as it has either an indefinable charm, or an average case great dial or a great dial average case, etc......this one not, pretty charmless to me. Poor dial and soft case, knackered crown and maybe a bent lug.....and as for the price! 😵‍💫

Agreed, price is bonkers - honest though it is.

Hello,

You should start a different thread about this.
