The Chronostop is an eccentric watch, especially the “driver” version designed to be worn underneath the wrist. This one is a non-driver, a trim, spiffy watch with an 865 movement, a serious mechanism that is apparently a stripped-down version of the 861 of Speedmaster fame. The stopwatch function is streamlined to the point of starkness: Push to start, push and hold to stop and record the time, then release for the orange hand to fly back to zero.

The white printing and red logo against the dark gray dial make the understated cream hands and lume pips stand out. With the racing-style milliseconds register, the design presents a lot of information with impressively distraction-free legibility. I can’t say I found a lot of use for the mono-pusher stopwatch design, but then again I can count on two and a half hands the number of times I’ve used any chronograph stopwatch functions in earnest over the past 25 years. On the wrist, the Chronostop has a satisfying all-business look, a tool watch that isn’t trying to look like the control panel of the Concorde. The case is 35mm across and 39.1mm from lug to lug.

I have not serviced this watch and it seems to have never been in the shop. I replaced the gasket, which was shot. It keeps great time and looks pretty clean inside, but 54 years is a long time to go without a trip to the watchmaker. The case is unpolished with clearly evident radial brushing, along with signs of honest wear. I’ve tried to document the dings, though I can’t see them at all without the help of a loupe or camera. The white flecks visible in the photos are on the crystal; there’s also a speck of black schmutz on the underside of the crystal just north of the 4 that I’ve tried to capture in a photo. This might have come from the slightly shrunken triangular 12 lume marker, which is normally hidden behind the timer hand.

I ask US$950 [REDUCED to $800—I WILL NOT BE UNDERSOLD!! (because no one is selling these things any cheaper)] plus shipping (around $30 wherever Japan Post EMS delivers) for this watch, including the pictured NATO strap. I can accept PayPal or Wise transfers as well as a direct bank transfer in USD or JPY. I and the watch are in Japan. Shipping times vary wildly depending on where you are in the world—USA, Europe, UK is pretty snappy; Canada and Oceania are glacial. I’ve had success speeding things up through an intermediary in the US.

Please examine the photos carefully and ask if you have any questions. No returns unless anything in the foregoing is grossly misrepresented. I have a few testimonials on this site and unanimous accolades on Japan’s Yahoo! Auctions.
