Hi this is my first post and i would like to introduce my second acquisition of omega.
My first was a 1952 constellation found (and i mean found) in a pile of rubble on the back of a van,but we can come back to that .
The issue at hand and at the foremost is my latest find an Omega century date to 1957 .

Description: omega 'century' case no 14714-5-SC.

THE MOVEMENT IS NUMBERED 17893952 AND CALIBER 285
I have seen some centuries with numerals and arrow markers together but not just arrow markers.
The black dial is contoured and has small amount of gold fleck.I know the second hand is missing in the picture but all is well now having fitted a new (although an old1950's) second hand, repolished the case and crystal

Thought i would share this with you and hope any light can be shed as i have not been able to find any info on this watch

Thanks for your response, and interesting that you have dated it at 1961. Having just looked at my cal. bible the 17000000 movement was used earliest in 1959 thu to 1961. It was then used again in small batches in 1963 and used in the speedmaster in 1960 .
Not sure where i got 1957 from perhaps the case number lead me there or i may have confused myself with details on the Gruen precision i also picked up (not to worry)

I will be honest and say i paid £160 for the century . After polishing and cleaning as well as replacing the second hand i am very happy with it. Have i made a wise investment ? or should i wear it with a certain amount of pleasure
Just for the fun of it here is the Gruen precision before i cleaned and polished it . This too is a very nice looking example of a vintage wrist watch with a smooth self winding movement. 1209433645724040_1.jpg

The Omega Database listing doesn't give you the manufacture date or production range of the case reference. The dates you see there are the dates that Omega began manufacturing that particular movement. So the cal. 285 production began in 1958 and cal. 286 started in 1961.

I'd say that your watch was probably made in 1960 or early 1961.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for your replies and i would agree 1960-1861 . Still a nice watch for 50 years old and in better shape than i am
Would it be safe to say i paid a fair price or could i have spent my hard earned on another omega

At a little over US$250, I think you did OK. Provided that the new seconds hand and any service work wasn't ridiculously expensive.

    Enjoy,

Post up some pics of the Constellation you found, keen to see what it is. Many people take a swing on watches like this, for $250 you're ok, we've had people pay much more for much worse come on this site.

Based on further research this Canadian link is likely misinformation that I read somewhere. I believe Gator has information indicating that the Century is another Norman Morris for the USA product.

Wish I could take credit, but I can't. Full credit should go to SteveW's Old-Omegas.com website. Largest library of original Omega literature on the web. Century stuff is down at the bottom of this 1959 Omega US pricelist. There's also prices for the Seamaster Grand Luxe as discussed on another thread.

Thanks guys some useful feedback. the old price list from 1959 is an eye opener for sure bearing in mind an average weekly wage in the UK for only £3. The plus side there were $4 to £1 so my century would have cost £20-£25 (still a kings ransom )
The constellation on the other hand would have bee £60-£70 (5 months pay)

Here are a few pics of the constellation i found shortly before restoration.
gold capped with bumper (hammer) dated and confirmed at 1952
this one had Japanese zodiac markers and one had come free. this was refitted and the case and crysyal repolished to a very good finish. The movement was also cleaned and oiled
As i previously said the one was found after a site clearance and under a pile of rubble.
SOLD a few months ago for £600. which sparked my interest in vintage watches

The average UK wage is only £26,200, so a lot of the new luxury watches would still amount to a few months net pay for a lot of ordinary folks.
