I try to save links to useful references, but alas the internet is sometimes a fleeting and crumbling library. I have had this helpful thread from WUS in 2011 bookmarked for some time, but when I looked today the images are gone. I'm wondering if anyone knows which company used this stamp: I think they made most if not all 176.005s, both in steel and gold plated. I think the stamp is a stylized nahrwal or swordfish. Most of the other cases for cal. 1040s were made by Piquerez, FWIW.
That is the "dead fish" stamp, indicating the owner now 'sleeps with the fishes'. Most often found on watches sold by Norman Morris out of NY and NJ.
Ahh, I picked up on the sleep with the fishes part being a joke the first time around, I assumed you were serious about the symbol being Norman Morris though. My bad!
This type of fish stamp belongs to the case makers, John Vallon. No association specifically with NM as far as I know.
