    Hi all

Still on the hunt for a case for my cal 283, and it's a long road. It's a honeycomb dial, sweep second hand, so the case references that go with this seem to be CK 2496 CK 2504 CK 2506 CK 2608 on OVD.

But… does anyone out there know what calibre fits 2402-3? On the OVD, 2402 is shown as a gold case, but the seller's case is SS, number clearly stamped, so no mistake – is this for cal 342/344, and this particular case merely a SS variant (-3?)?

The case style in OVD usually has little bearing on what metals were originally available for that case ref. Many of the case references featured in OVD were available in a variety of case metals - steel, solid gold and gold plate/cap. Of course there are exceptions such as the early speedmasters which were available only in stainless steel.

Regarding your situation, while cal. 283 may fit a variety of cases, if you have a dial attached to that movement then you will have to make sure the dial will fit the case you decide to get (if you do not know the case your movement originally came from). And ref. 2402 is for a 342/344 automatic bumper movement. In fact the entry in OVD for 2402 says in the text 14k solid gold case and the photo showing a steel case with a gold bezel.

Thanks, MSN. Points taken, and appreciated. The references I cited are for honeycomb dial, sweep, cal 283, so the hunt goes on…

As Mike says, the dial diameter will be the deciding factor. There are lots of cases for the cal 28x series, varying from 33mm in diameter right up to 36 plus. On the larger cases there is sometimes a distance piece between the movement and the case (more often on the gold cases), and the dial too will be correspondingly larger. The other factor to bear in mind that the stem will also need to be longer for the larger cases (matched with the correct crown, of course). But that is easy to fix. You can purchase a case which matches the cal 283, alright, but you then run the risk of the dial being too big for the case and not going in, or too small with a gap between the tension ring and the edge of the dial :(
