Could you elaborate on that? The hands seem to be the original ones? The case does look polished though
Thanks. I contacted the seller directly, and he told me it was "original". I find it difficult to trust any sellers on ebay selling brand-watches. Could you tell me what I should look for, so I can identify whether it is a redial or not? It is exhausting to keep posting in this forum, and must to some degree be annoying for you to have reoccurring messages about the same topic all the time.
Some sellers less inclined to be absolutely truthful will claim an original dial, although it has been refinished, because, technically, it is the original dial. They just failed to mention that their "original" dial has been refinished.
Just so I can learn a bit more By "repainted" what exactly do you mean? I can kind of see that the lettering is a bit off, and though most of the minute markers seem pretty even, there is a nasty one next to the date window. However, do you think the rest of the dial has been repainted? It seems to have a "linen" texture which does not seem to be the sort of slapdash work seen on the worst of the Mumbai Specials. Would "relettered" or "reprinted" be a more accurate term?
If you're interested in finding authentic vintage watches, I'm afraid there are no shortcuts. You'll need to train your eye to find the subtleties of authentic dials by spending lots of time reading forums, reference books, old advertisements and catalogs. It takes time, but it can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of the hobby.
The immediate giveaway is that the "Seamster" font is obviously incorrect. You'll need to gain experience, and do some work comparing other dials, in order to be able to see these things at a glance.
Just look at pictures. after a while you see it clearly (sometimes). This one is baaaaad. Compare, i.e. : Perfect thin even minute marks, perfect serif fonts...
