Omega cal.30, Jumbo 37,5mm

Hi everyone,

I recently came across this fascinating Omega Jumbo (37.5 mm) in a Staybrite steel case. The watch lacks a model reference on the inside of the case back- it only has the case serial 9,841,046.
Inside beats an ultra- early, rhodium-plated base Calibre 30 (movement serial 8,894,822).
Both serials perfectly match the late 1939 / early 1940 production era.The black gilt dial is all-original. Under close inspection, the movement sits flawlessly inside the stepped inner rim of the case, and the case screws align perfectly, ruling out a frankenwatch. Visually, it strongly resembles ref. CK 2097, but it’s from the pre- reference era.
My question: Have any of you encountered Jumbo powered by the rhodium- plated Cal. 30 in this exact 37.5mm case?

Very nice, isn't it a 2186?

The case is very similar, maybe even identical to ref. 2186, but with an earlier movement inside- the base cal. 30 instead of the later 30T2.

Yes, I have 2 of them, one I have an extract for ref CK 2497 - from the first batch of 600 movement units
Photo was taken without bezel/crystal to avoid reflections. The black-dialed watches are very hard to take photos of...

Edit: must be CK 2097 and not 2497 - error of the staff who created the EoA.

Thank you for the input! Isn't ref. 2497 a post- war model from around 1949 with a 35mm case?

Yes, of course you are correct!
I have checked with my numbers which I took from the Omega archives and have realised that there must be a typo in the extract I showed.
IMO it should read 2097 instead of 2497 - makes more sense...
We see that we must be cautious even with EoA - it is not the first time that they made a serious mistake.

You know the history of the Calibre 30 movements better than anyone else, so I have a question about my specific unit. My movement's serial number starts with 8 984 xxx. Does it officially fall within that first production run of 600 units from 1939? Or was it assembled later using leftover parts from that early batch? Thanks!

No, your movement ist an early specimen from the beginning of the second nach - still a wonderful collectable watch. It has all what a collector wants: large case, black galvanic dial and a coveted movement. enjoy!

Nie, twój mechanizm to wczesny egzemplarz z początku drugiej części - wciąż wspaniały zegarek kolekcjonerski. Ma wszystko, czego oczekuje kolekcjoner: dużą obudowę, czarną galwaniczną tarczę i pożądany mechanizm. Miłej zabawy!

Dziękuję za wyjaśnienie. Cieszę się, że to wczesny przykład z drugiej partii. Czy masz pełne dane dotyczące łącznej liczby mechanizmów Calibre 30 wyprodukowanych w wersji podstawowej (bez oznaczeń T1/T2) we wszystkich partiach? Mam już całkiem sporo zegarków z mechanizmami Cal. 30, 30T1, 30T2 i 30T2Rg; Myślę, że nadszedł czas, by kupić twoją książkę. Czy jest jeszcze dostępna?

Thank you for the explanation. I'm glad this is an early example from the second party. Do you have full data on the total number of Calibre 30 movements produced in the basic version (without T1/T2 markings) in all batches? I already have quite a few watches with Cal mechanisms. 30, 30T1, 30T2 and 30T2Rg; I think it's time to buy your book. Is it still available?

Where are you finding preserved dials like that, its so hard to find black dials like this !

these dials are not black lacquered (which often deteriorate) but galvanically plated black - hence they stay very well over time.

Oh man it looks amazing in the Gold as well, I am not sure which one is my fav the black or the gold? Or maybe I would be like you and have one of each? lol

Out of curiosity, how much and how easy is it to get an Omega extract ?
I got one on a Soccer Time I own but it came with the watch and Ive always wondered if its worth getting them for the rarer watches
