Omega does call this the reference number. The reference number is for the whole watch, so under that number you will find dials, hands, case, movement, bracelets/straps, etc. If one thing changes, so from a bracelet to a strap for example, the reference number will change.

The case number (or case reference) only tells you about the case, not anything else. The 3450808 is a partial case number...full number is 055ST3450808. This identifies it first as a case number (055), the case material (ST = Stainless Steel), and then the rest describes the other specifics. That case is obsolete, and is replaced by 055ST1450808, which is a case used on 8 different reference numbers, so 8 different watches. So saying the case number = reference number is not really applicable to modern watches like it is with the older vintage stuff, because one case can be used on many watches.
