Hi all, I am something of a vintage watch notice and would be most grateful for your valuable knowledge. I am looking to buy a vintage watch - my first - for a 30th birthday present to myself. I am currently living in Tokyo and have come across the attached watch in a local specialist store. (Sorry about the quality of the photo.) It is listed as a 1962 Omega Seamaster 30, manual, certified original. It is stainless steel with silver dial. It has the expected wear and tear for its age, but overall it is in beautiful condition. It seems like the prices are quite variable online - and given that I am buying this in Japan it is difficult to get much in the way of physical comparisons out here. So I was wondering if the list price of around USD1,500 seemed reasonable? I am sure there is a bit of a 'Tokyo Tax' on it, as there is on everything from apples to shoes out here! Thank you in advance James
Hi James, It's a nice looking watch (from the single photo). I hear that things in Japan can be quite expensive, but at USD$1500 that watch better come with two identical sisters. Regards Jim
+1 Nice enough watch, but wayyyyyy too much for that. 500USD would find you a pretty nice one with a bit of searching.
Hi James! Do you know a shop called Item by Time Anagram in Shibuya? It's small but they have a nice selection of vintage Omegas. They are expensive by Omega Forum standards, but I bet you could find a comparable watch there for closer to $1000. Otherwise, I think you should buy from Private Watch Sales on here: honorable sellers, fair prices! You'll just have to wait a little while the DHL makes its way to you!
Hi James, there are also a number of ebay sellers based in Japan that are well-regarded by the forum. The list can be found in the Seller Profiles and Reviews subforum.
Hi Guys, thank you very much for your input and responses. That's extremely helpful. I hadn't heard of Time Anagram, but I will certainly check it out. Very much appreciated, all.
Do you trust the seller ? If answer is YES - Why are you questioning authenticity ? If answer is NO - Why did you buy the watch ? Always buy the Seller,… never just the watch
I haven't met the seller yet, so i don't know what kind of guy i'm dealing with. I haven't bought the watch yet. I want your opinion before i decide to buy it.
Here is the link to the Item by Time Anagram site. I was so tickled to go there and see these 20-something guys working away to restore and resurrect these 50 year old watches. http://item.ocnk.net/
