hey guys, I wonder why the picture in the official papers / catalogue / manual are „wrong“. Especially the A in Omega. Do anyone knows further informations? Have a nice day. Thanks
In the catalogue you see all printed letters on the dial, and on the real watch the symbol, as well as the letters OMEGA and 125 are with AML. Small differences like these you can usually spot on the user guides or even old adverts. The reason why I don’t know, maybe someone else on this forum can chime in.
Many times the image given to the marketing department isn't the final production model since the marketing materials have to be in advance of the watch.
That dial was a prototype or preproduction dial that was used in the manuals and advertisements around the the release of the watch in the 1970s. The Omega Museum has the watch with that dial installed, possibly the model from those images. Monochrome used actual photos of it in this article: https://monochrome-watches.com/omega-speedmaster-history-part-1-1970s-editions/ You can see several differences in those photos between the prototype and the production dials: 1. Production dials used an applied metal logo and the words OMEGA and 125 2. The production dial didn't include the numeral 60 3. The position of the words AUTOMATIC CHRONOMETER are offset in the prototype, and CHRONOMETER is below the date window 4. The hashes around the 9:00 subdial are longer on the prototype For comparison here's the prototype: And here's a production dial: The prototype looks like it was disassembled and reassembled by a drunk watchmaker sometime after it was used as the pre-release model. Obviously the bezel is out of wack, but notice how the time and 24 hour indicator are out of sync. And the date is in the middle of changing when neither the time or 24 hour indicator is very close to 12:00...
Thank you so much for this information!! I am searching for a totally original 125 but unfortunately I didn‘t see any with original hands from that time with patina - all are snowwhite. This one belongs to my friend but he asks a way too much money :-( What do you think about this 125, especially the dial? Some pics of other 125s from memberd here would be great )
Dial looks correct and original but in relatively poor shape. Most dials survived with less aging and less discoloration on the hour markers, likely because these were expensive and marketed as collectors’ items. Here are mine:
Are the hands of your watch the original ones or sometimes during Service replaced. The hour markers on yours looks pretty new
Both are original, though I can see how the above photo makes them look a little too white. Here are some photos of them individually that capture the hour hands better: Left: Right:
Hi, thanks for the pictures. What about the minute hand. They are different. My friend‘s watch has the prototype one?! He says that this watch was never touched.
The needle hand isn't a prototype hand, it was just a variation, also correct. Some came with baton hands, some with needle/syringe-tipped hands.
