No More! I’m Declaring a Watch Fast 2022 - Who’s with Me?

Greetings!

This year I have bought way too many watches. The feast must end.

Soon I will be buried alive by these goddamn tiny ticking machines if I don't change my behavior. About a month ago I decided “no more watches this year” and here we go again. I just bought this lovely cheapo diver. It was so reasonably priced and recently serviced. Pic from seller.

I must learn how to resist the siren song of vintage beauties. Hence, I am declaring a watch fast! Starting date 1.1.2022.

A human can survive without food for 30-60 days, so let’s see how long a watch collector can last before he succumbs and makes a new purchase?

Who’s with me in this doomed and masochistic endeavor?

This sounds like a great idea. I’ve also added an unreasonable amount of watches to my collection iver the last couple years.

You need to join the OIOO* club instead, a much more realistic goal.

We, the OF collective, are in full support of you brother. You just need to transfer your 2022 budget to another OF member (line up behind me folk) and your desire not to acquire more more watches will be satisfied.

Good rule of thumb. Not for me, though. I have a degree in history so I have been trained to appreciate and preserve junk from the past. Yes, I blame university for my watch hoarding 😁

What does this mean "too many watches" ?

I know, it's a difficult concept to grasp. "Too many watches" means that a watch feast turns into an actual fast when you finally run out of money. As you starve to death the last thing you hear is the tick tick tick of your magnificent collection and a distant notification ding - someone liked your post on OF.

I try to avoid that fate.

Thought that this was going to a thread about de-magnetizing……

Turns out to be much more scary.

Over many decades, I have acquired a lot of watches. Three in particular were gifted to me. Two were given to me in the late 1980s by an elderly chap whose family presented him with a new Rolex. One of these watches had belonged to his grandfather, then his father, then he fell heir to it. It was a mess, so I sorted it out, and kept it. The other watch he gave me, replaced the heirloom one when it was wrecked. Now, his new Rolex replaced both of these watches, and he wanted me to have them because his son (early ‘30s in 1985) was wearing a Rado, and wasn’t interested in these two.

Recently, it occurred to me that I might be able to locate the son, and to perhaps repatriate these family watches to him. A distinctive name meant he wasn’t hard to find. He has “grown up” in the last 35 years. He appreciates having them back. Incidentally, he still has his ceramic Rado, but he wears his late father’s Rolex with pride.

The third watch was brought to me for an estimate to repair. The owner declined the repair, but never picked the watch up. That was about 20 years ago. It is a very distinctive watch, and it was presented to the owner’s father circa 1915. I fixed it up, and contemplated adding it to my collection. But I still had the owner’s phone number, so I phoned it to find he had died. I told his widow about the watch, and told her it was of historic significance to her family, and they should have it. Her son picked it up, and he loves it!

In short, I still acquired many more watches this year than I divested myself of. I’ll soon need to rent a larger safety deposit box.😀

Such good deeds rarely go unrewarded in the horological world. Rest assured, thou shall attain your grail! 😀

Yeah, good luck recruiting me, I'm a professional glutton...actually, now that I think about it, I prefer the non-professional dials! 😎
