Hi everyone, I've been offered a good condition Ed White (see photos) - all original including the correct crown (not shown in photos - will be added from another Ed White the dealer has if I take the watch), handset, dust cover, bezel DON and the inside/movement all checks out. Archived papers from Omega provided. But and it's a big but.... the (very reputable dealer in London) wants GBP 20K which seems like 5K too much looking at others on the market etc... The dealers assures me that prices for Ed Whites and other vintage Speedies are going up which seems plausible given the vintage watch market generally and the 50th anniversary coming up but any views would be most appreciated!
Is dial chocolate? Sounds wayyyyyy too much to me. @airansun has been picking them off ebay for ~12kUSD. Maybe the market for them is cooling?
GBP 20,000 might be for a pristine, nearly flawless one, with a proper mint bracelet. Maybe. For reference of what I mean: The posted photos are, of course, horrible, so it’s not possible to be more specific, but certainly under $15k, or GBP 11.5k.
agree w/ all the sentiments here. that price is for the best looking ed white ever. that one isn't it. 13-14k USD
Thanks a lot people.... I thought as much.... I think I would be paying at least 5K over the top to cover this dealers's very expensive central London rent! Agree photos are horrible so appreciate your response.... it's a very good example but I wouldn't say 100% mint and not on the original bracelet... I'm new to the forum so could anyone let me know if it's possible/appropriate to post a request for an Ed White on the forum?
Every time a watch is discussed for around 20k, I remember someone writing that for around 20k range they'd get rather a Porsche Boxster or something like that. Good reference to keep at the back of my head..
I think @bags1971 has one up for sale? https://omegaforums.net/threads/value.79957/ Forgive me if I'm wrong. Much better buy.
That price is absurd. Your photos are pretty poor but it's worth no where near that. As soon as someone starts spouting lines like "prices are going up which is why I've priced this here" you know they're talking Bull shit. As a side point, I'd also be wary of a dealer selling a watch with "all original parts", who strangely enough is quite willing to take parts of other watches and substitute them onto another to close a sale.
Yeah I was thinking the very same thing myself just this afternoon...bit more expensive to run and store mind.
A few sold last week on the bay for like 11.5-12k USD that were in okay shape. Based on the pics you provided I would say it is in that value range, perhaps a bit more but sounds like a pretty heftty dealer tax.
there were a few very nice in the private sales section hear on OF during the last month which were much more attractive and very well priced. So keep your eyes open. Best luck !
I know of a dealer that calls pieces all original But when questioned will admit some parts are not original to the watch but are OEM pieces. For example he tried to sell a speedy with a DN90 bezel that should have had a DON but he called it original since it was a OB service replacement bezel. Very confusing.
It's kind of insane because if you call him out on it he jumps through semantic hoops and says it is original since it's an OEM piece. It drives me crazy.
