Who needs to have some other "enthusiast" tell them what to collect?

^ I think it was more of a "don't dismiss it out of hand" perspective (see the Rolex point in the same article) but yeah

"How can you call yourself a watch guy and not own a Speedmaster?" and "It's pretty much the most satisfying watch in the world." are more than just a reminder to try one out. :p

Having owned a 68 transitional, and on the lookout for an Alaska Project, yes, everybody should own one. Or at least lease it for a while...

No shame! I see a LOT of watches I quite dislike! I won't enumerate them. However, I DO own two Speedmasters, along with 14 other Omegas I quite like!

He gives a shoutout to omegaforums.net in the article and also clears up the whole deployant/deployment debate. @ulackfocus should appreciate that.

it's a nice watch, no doubt about it, but if a person who has no need for a stopwatch, why would you buy one ?

I'll answer your question by asking you one: have you ever made a purchase of something for a reason other than pure utility? Because you liked it's style, it's history, it's status (regardless of whether that is a noble reason)? If so, then you have your answer.

My point is half of the Speedmaster's dial is covered by dials I would never use ..... so regardless of style, history or status, there are other Omegas and other watches more suited for me.

Sort of like why buy a fabulous Dunhill cigarette lighter if you don't smoke.

I was actually thinking the same thing. True he already made the great point about imthe inverse bell curve on Rolex, and didn't need to make 2 rolex points. But from the iconic tool watch standpoint they are neck and neck and are more similar then not.

I assumed you were not a fan from your initial statement. I figured you were asking why someone else would buy one, who might not be using the stopwatch function.

And, yes, if I liked the style, craftsmanship and history of the Dunhill lighter, I would consider buying it, even as a non-smoker.

And just like if you bought the Speedmaster, surely there would be something you would end up timing at some point, if I bought the lighter, I'm sure I could find a beauty with corroded lungs who needs her cigarette lighted.
